The BataviaArmy Garrison was established in 1795 and saw service during the American Revolution. The Garrison was disbanded in 1802, but re-established as a battalion of the 5th Regiment New York Volunteers in 1804. The unit served with distinction until its disbandment in 1815. In 1816, an Act of Congress authorized the erection of a military post at Batavia, NY to serve as a garrison for vessels captured by the United States during the War of 1812. The post was named after General James Wilkinson, who had been killed in action at Saratoga Peninsula that year. The garrison provided support for American forces operating against British forces on Long Island and in Canada. The Garrison was reactivated on July 3, 1830 and served until it was discontinued on February 6, 1834. During its existence, the Garrison has presented numerous awards including two Congressional Medals of Honor and several battle stars to members thereof.

Batavia is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. Batavia is the original home of the Erie Canal and currently the site of a rail yard for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor line. The first people to live in what is now Batavia were Lenape Indians who came from upstate New York in search of land to hunt and trade with. They built their own villages along the banks of the Niagara River. In 1624, Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered this area and named it after his hometown, Verrazzano's Landing on Staten Island in New York City. The village was abandoned by 1760 because of economic reasons and later burned down by British forces during the American Revolution. In 1814-1815, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led an expedition against Spain through this area when he attempted to open up trade with that country along the newly formed Ulysses S Grant Canal project. Spanish soldiers burned down several villages while they were stationed here as part of their operations against Perry's forces. In 1817-1821, Batavia served as both capital city and state capital for Monroe County when Albany was moved from its original location near Schenectady to this spot due to growing statewide tensions over slavery and other issues dividing New York into northern and southern states at that time. In 1825, when territorial boundaries were set off among new states forming America following its acquisition by Confederation, Batavia became part of Ontario County, New York which included all present-day Monroe County excepting Syracuse (then part of Albany) until it became a separate county within New York State in 1850. During World War I (1914-1918), Batavia was one of many small communities across America hardest hit by war shortages caused by European involvement in that conflict; however Allied troops never reached here directly due to US military reserve requirements at that time governing military action outside North America proper (the so-called "militarized zone"). This situation changed following Armistice Day 1918 when General John J Pershing ordered all American armies involved in World War I inactive; however continuing combat continued across most or all theaters despite this order as hostilities intensified around Europe resulting in thousands more dead than saw during World War I totals prior thereto including more than 12%of total Ussal population). By 1924 $1 million had been raised for war relief efforts nationally through local committees throughout United States; however no such funds ever arrived locally here given lack thereof preceding events horizon

Batavia was a small town in the extreme southwestern corner of New York State, lying on the Chenango River. It was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624 and became an important trading center during the early 17th century. The area now known as Batavia was first settled by Algonquians, who were displaced by the Iroquois in 1614. The first European to arrive in what is now Batavia was Nicholas Wallenius, an admiral of the Dutch East India Company, who journeyed down the Chenango River in search of new land to settle. In 1625, Wallenius purchased two tracts of land from Chief Massahegan and built a cabin there. The following year, he donated seven acres (27 hectares) of his property to the town for use as a school ground and cemetery. The first structure erected in Batavia was a log cabin located near present-day Main Street and Seneca Avenue. This cabin served as both a home and school for local children until it burned down in 1811. A second log cabin was built soon afterwards and served as the town's courthouse until it burned down also in 1811. One of Batavia's most important landmarks was its Native American graveyard which can still be seen today at Woodrow Wilson Boulevard and Seneca Avenue. The site has been leased by local schools since 1904 for use as a playground
