Batavia was a small town in upstate New York, located on the outskirts of Albany. It was founded by Dutch farmers in 1714 as an agricultural outpost on the Mohawk River. The village grew gradually and reached its peak during the 18th century, when it had a population of around 1,500 people. After years of decline and displacement due to the Revolutionary War and other conflicts, Batavia fell victim to social and economic decline in the 19th century. In 1857, it was destroyed by a fire that swept through the town. Today, only a few remains of Batavia remain; they are used for storage or as part of landscaping around Albany University.
The United States Air Force deployed gift history during World War II. The USAF flew strategic bombers, such as the B-24 Liberator, in support of the war effort. This gave rise to the term "Air Force Gift History." One of the most famous Air Force Gift Histories was that of General Curtis LeMay. General LeMay was part of the OKAF (operational cadet) program and worked his way up through the air force. He became commander of Ninth Air Force in 1942 and then Eighth Air Force in 1943. After a successful campaign against Japan, he was named Commander in Chief United States Strategic Forces Europe in 1945. In this capacity, he ordered Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear plants. In 1948, General LeMay was promoted to Commanding General United States Strategic Bombing Forces in Europe (USSTRATCOM). He served there until his retirement from service in 1957. During his time at USSTRATCOM, he also directed Operation Thor which knocked out two key German dams on Lake Mitteleuropa. General LeMay is considered one of America’s most celebrated military leaders and has been honored with many awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and numerous citations for bravery and distinguished service throughout his career. His legacy continues on with what is now known as The Curtis LeMay Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB where visitors can experience first hand how generalLemay led American forces during World War II
