It is bordered to the north by Rome, to the east by Chenango County and to the south by Cortland County. Auburn was platted in 1828 as a town on Munson's map of upstate New York. The first settler in what would become Auburn was Gideon Cook from Vermont who arrived in 1830. In 1834-35, James Whitfield built a mill on Buffalo Creek for grinding corn for local consumption andexportation. He also bought land forña "a mile long and two wide", which he named Whitneyville after his father-in-law Major General Arthur Whitney (1792-1859). In 1836, Augustus Kelley moved from Syracuse to Chenango County with his family and founded what would become known as Auburn Junction where he manufactured goods including saddles, bridles, wheels and other farm machinery used throughout Upstate New York. In 1840-41 John Purdy settled near present day Whitestone Boulevard when he came across wild horses that were being hunted by Native Americans near modern day Auburn Hills suburb of Romulus. After some years OF observation he decided they were not dangerous enough to be kept around so he released them into the community today known as Purdy Park located off Hwy 375 about 2 miles NE of downtown Auburn NY . The first school in Auburn was built in 1839 on private property between present day Fourth Street SW and Fifth Avenue SW cornering what becamePresent Day Whitehall Road NW . A second school opened on Greenmount Avenue SW in 1840 which served students until 1850 when it burned down due to weather conditions while housing farmers markets during winter months
