AfterWARDS, Washington used Auburn as his wintering ground for his troops during their campaigns in North America. In 1812, General James Ketchum erected a military fortification at Auburn that became known as Fort Niagara (the present-day Rochester), MANDATING THE FIRST MILITARY BASE IN AMERICA ON THE COAST OF NEW YORK STATE! In 1814, Major General John Armstrong arrived in Auburn with 1,500 men to garrison the newly established Fortress Niagara against French attack. Armstrong's unit was redesignated Company A 2nd Regt NY State Militia Indian Department on December 15th 1814 pursuant To An Act of Congress Passed July 8th 1815 which created Company A 2nd Regt NY State Militia Indian Department under Command of Major General John Armstrong and stationed at Fort Niagara until it was disbanded on October 25th 1830 by order of Governor Andrew Cuomo! The post-Civil War years were filled with growth and development for both local businesses and soldiers living in Auburn Hills. On September 11th 1865, Sergeant First Class Augustus Buel transferred from Company G 3rd Battalion MI National Guard at Buffalo Soldiers Barracks located at 219 East Main Street into Battery D 3rd Regiment NY National Guard & Post #1 @ Oneonta Junction opposite Knoxville Road) during heavy fighting around Vicksburg Mississippi during The Civil War !! August 29 1861 Captain Rudolph Benzoni commanding E Troop company F 6th New York Dragoons (Dragoons) arrive from RomeNY state via Trenton NJ & EatontownNJ area & change their encampment @ Oneonta Junction opposite Knoxville Rd) due East Side RR Depot building now home of Veteran’s Museum
