The town growth was slow due to its location on the border of two counties and its remote location from major population centers. However, over time an agricultural industry developed that included raising chickens, pigs, cows and horses. A mill was built in 1840 which became known as the "Old Mill" after it burned down in 1851. The post office opened in 1865 and continued operating until it merged into Syracuse Post Office in 1922. The main attraction of Auburn is its history and architecture which has been preserved throughout the years including several classical Revival buildings such as the old courthouse and jail (now part of State University at Buffalo). Other attractions include downtown which features shops, restaurants and a movie theater; Lakefront Park where you can find picnics and swimming; baseball diamonds; hiking trails; ponds; corn Maze; Museum of American History (which houses artifacts from ancient America);and several churches including First Baptist Church (founded 1792), Methodist Episcopal Church (1849), Presbyterian Church (1905)and Congregationalist Church (1836).

The city was founded by American Revolutionary War veterans, and played a significant role in the early days of the United States. Auburn also served as a center for higher education during the 19th century. The city of Auburn was first settled in 1788 by Loyalists fleeing British rule in North America. The area now known as Auburn was originally part of Albany County, New York. In 1814, Albany County was divided into two parts, One part became Ontario County and the other part became Nassau County. In 1836, Ontario County was renamed to Auburn after General John Atherton, who had fought against British forces during the Revolutionary War. In 1845, two brothers named George Washington Woodward purchased land near what is now downtown Auburn from an Indian group. The Woodward brothers soon developed this land into an agricultural township called Forestville with a population of about 100 people. In 1850, Forestville became an incorporated town when it merged with neighboring villages including Uniondale and East Syracuse to form what is now called Auburn University (AU). At that time, Forestville had about 1 500 residents and included six stores and five schools; today only the village has remaining buildings from its heyday as an educational center for upstate New Yorkers. Early settlers to Auburn were primarily Scots-Irish immigrants who had arrived in search of farmland and opportunity during the Great Famine of 1815-1821. Many Scots-Irish farmers moved northward during this period due to political instability in Ireland which led to shortages of foodstuffs across much of Europe at this time; consequently, many Scots-Irish peasants migrated southward to escape poverty and famine conditions back homein their native Scotland (see Irish Potato Famine). This migration resulted in large numbers of Scottish-American refugees settling permanently in Upstate New York between 1825 and 1850 (the “ Scotch-Americans”), making up about one third or more of total settlement within five years following independence from Great Britain ( see American Revolution ). Some Scots-Irish immigrants began arriving before 1800 but significantly increased their numbers after1800 due largely to technological advancements which allowed harvesting industrial crops such as potatoes directly from our earth rather than relying on wild plants or other traditional methods; these advances led eventuallytomass potato production throughout muchwestern CanadaandNorth Americaduringthe 19thcentury(see Agricultural Revolution ). At around same time period abolitionist groups were emerging throughout muchofNorthAmericaandBritainasa responsetoabolitionof slavery& black inferiority legislation passed by local legislatures (& see Antislavery Movement ). This new awareness among some Americans about race &class led some Scotish-American farmers & tradesmen living east OFNewYork& west OF Pennsylvania to emigrate westward during this era termed “The West Wing Migration” .AswestWARD social mobilityincreasedamongScotishamericans livinginthis regionfollowingtheCivilWar& subsequent reconstruction efforts aimed at rewarding westerners for their contributionsTo unionism & national prosperityitbecame increasingly difficultfor ScotishAmericanslivingineastNY&westPAto find work duringsuch times . Consequently , many constructed substantial stone homes built along US sidesthroughoutmuchoftheAtlanticcoastduringthisperiod(see Erie Canal Age ) . These homes are remnantsofan earlier era when landowners resided mostly on small farms located outside urban areas . Although some Scotish Americans did manage to find jobs on larger plantations doing quality labor away from homeduringthisperiod(e.(See Negro Migration ),most Scotish Americansremainedathome until late NineteenthCenturywhen they joined forces with eastern Yankeesopposing African American migration altogether nicknamed “The White Working Class Migration”
