The history of Amsterdam, New York begins with the Dutch colony of New Netherland in 1624. The area that is now Amsterdam was then a part of Albany County and was known as "Nieuw Amsterdam." In 1664, the English took over the Dutch colony, renamed it Rhode Island and began to trade with it. In 1665, they also founded Hartford, Connecticut. The English wanted to protect their shipping lanes and so they started buildingFort Amsterdam in what is now Ithaca, New York on Governors Island. The fortifications were completed in 1672 and served as a trading post for the English until 1712 when they abandoned the island. In 1716, the British captured Fort Amsterdam after a siege and made it their new capital at Kingston (now Kingston-upon-Hull). They continued to use Fort Amsterdam for administrative purposes until 1783 when they moved their capital from Kingston to Manhattan. In 1814, New York became an American state following the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire. As part of its effort to become an independent country, America annexed Holland's Scheldt estuary which included parts of present day Netherlands Antilles including Curacao and Bonaire. This caused some friction between America and Great Britain because both countries claimed sovereignty over different parts of the Scheldt estuary - America claimed Staten Island while Great Britain claimed everything else east of Curacao (the easternmost point on Aruba).
