The events began on November 17, 1979 and ended on December 15th when three members of the Amityville family were killed. The tragedy has left behind a lasting legacy in New York's history and culture. The town of Amityville was located in upstate New York, about 25 miles from Rochester. It was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s and became known as a place where good Protestant families could live without fear of religious persecution. In 1932, Reverend Franklin K. Greeley bought land for $10,000 near the community and founded the First Presbyterian Church there. He also built two houses for his congregation, which he called "Amityville". The Greeleys were not the only ones who lived in Amityville during its early days. There were also several other families who moved into the homes after they heard about Rev. Greeley's plans to build his church there. One of these families was the Bachmans, who arrived in 1935 and renamed their home "Hillsborough". They remained until 1941 when they finally moved out because of safety concerns raised by local police officers about possible cult activity at nearby Barker Lake (now part of Niagara Falls). After World War II ended, many people living near Buffalo returned to America and found new opportunities outside of cities. This led to increased competition for jobs within cities and also created more social distinctions between those who could afford to move away from traditional cultures and those who couldn't- often leading to tension between those inside traditional communities and newcomers outside them- particularly among Protestants like the Bachmans. In 1949, Reverend Greeley sold all his property except for one house which he had started building as part of his plan to move into it himself once it had been completed (the "House on Long Island"). This house became known as "AmityVILLE 2" after its purchase by Drury Lane Associates Inc., an advertising company based in Buffalo that specialized in selling properties within urban areas with high concentrations of population density (such as Manhattan). Drury Lane Associates soon became embroiled in controversy over their ownership of Amityville 2- specifically over whether or not they had permission from Mrs. Reece to build any additional additions thereto despite her objections due to health concerns she had about potential asbestos exposure from working on her adjacent home next door.. Ultimately, Mrs. Reece prevailed over her company partners', but this episode remains oneof New York State's most notorious unsolved mysteries.'
