The Amityville Horror was a tragic story of love and murder that took place in the town of Amityville, New York. On December 14, 1978, four people – two husbands and two wives – were killed by their own children after they moved into the home that had been built on top of a UFO. The community quickly came to believe that the strange phenomena surrounding the house had something to do with their parents' death. The tragedy continued when three more people died from mysterious causes within months of each other in 1979. By 1980, residents of Amityville were growing impatient with all the activity around the house and its presumed connection to their families' deaths. A group of local teens decided to take matters into their own hands and staged an armed robbery at the home on January 17th. Four days later, all six residents of the house were dead including one child who was found suffocated in his bedroom door. Since then, there has been much speculation about what actually happened in Amityville and whether or not any linkage between the various deaths could be proven. To date, no definitive answer has been found but memories of those killed remain strong throughout the townspeople today. As long as anyone is still living within earshot of The Amityville Horror House (or anywhere near it), they are guaranteed a visit from some form of terror!

Amityville, New York is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It was settled in 1795 by Amity and William Cooke. The area now known as Amityville became part of Kings County in 1802, after the creation of that county from parts of Ulster and Westchester counties. In 1809, Amityville's post office was renamed Prospect Heights; it moved to its current location on Route 9 in 1911. The community began to develop around two churches – the Congregationalist Church (founded 1806) and the Methodist Episcopal Church ( founded 1865). The first school opening in Amityville was the Prospect School (1810), which then became an all-girls school. In 1881, members of the Board of Education for Kings County organized a new school district named after themselves, which included most of what is now Amityville. That year, also saw the founding of Prospect Heights Cemetery, now home to over 7400 residents. In 1870–71, Amos Snyders developed what is now Park Manor on aspects offered by his father-in-law Samuel Phelps; this land would become one of only a few pieces remaining from what once constituted rural Kings County. With increased population growth throughoutKings County during this time period arising from waves of immigrants coming overland through Canada along the Erie Canal – many settling near where Prospect Heights Cemetery still stands today – development within Amityville accelerated significantly in both size and influence. By 1902, when census results were published for that year's town population,[2] it had grown to 1253 people – making it one-sevenththesizeofNewYork City at its peak.[3] It wasn't until 1912 that Prospect Heights Cemetery was finally dedicated as its own entity withBurke Stone officiating at its dedication ceremonies,[4][5] marking perhaps one last example(though not without controversy)of how village development could easily outpace local government support or even approval[6]. As late as 1930s records show that just 10%of residences within"the limits"of present day prospect heights "were occupied", despite some efforts made by trustees[7][8][9][10]to revive living quarters surrounding cemetery amidst rapidly deteriorating infrastructure and increasingly unaffordable housing conditions; such trends continue up through today's modern times with modestly sized cemeteries situated scattered around other largely affluent neighborhoods across towns throughout Upstate New York
