In 1917, when World War I began, Albany was known as "the breadbasket of America" because so much food came through its portage route from Canada via Buffalo and Rochester. After hostilities ended in 1918, much cargo traffic stopped at or passed through Albany en route to England or other European destinations. In fact, during World War I alone, Albany handled more than $5 million worth of goodsquincessentiallynearlyallofitcomingfromNewYorkstateandOntario。 The post-war boom that followed produced many new jobs for locals such as engineers and scientists at various defense installations including Fort Drum (which had become active again following World War II), but also generated large amounts of trash that needed to be disposed off quickly due to newly stricter regulations governing waste disposal within wartime zones (see especially https://www1s3us2c7tp0sherpa9rd1orl3oemrvw4). [W]e remember when people would come together from all over town just for lunch at Terminal Park because there were no restaurants anywhere else close by….. [S]ome people still refer nostalgically to that time period because there were no regulations then about how you could dispose OF your garbage……... Basically what we did then ... we took all that crap out into open fields nearby so people could see it and pick up pieces……... It really wasn't great environmentally speaking ....But back then nobody really cared." Today – more than 100 years after being founded – Fort Drum continues servein g as Headquarters for NY Army National Guard units responsible for homeland security duties throughout New York state & Ontario! Albany was founded in 1785 by George Washington as the capital of the Province of New York. The city grew rapidly and soon became one of the most important commercial and political centers in North America. Albany was renamed New York City in 1898, following the creation of New York State. In 1945, Albany merged with the adjacent citadel-town of Troy to form a new city-state called Albany-Troy. The city has since undergone several major transformations, including becoming an center for technology and renewable energy development; hosting international scientific and cultural events; and becoming a hub for arts, culture, education, and business. The history of Albany begins with its location on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. In 1785, George Washington proposed that what is now Albany be made the capital of New York because it had long been an important economic center on both sides of the river. The proposal received support from then-Governor John Jay, who saw Albany as a key threat to Philadelphia's position as capital of Pennsylvania. In response to this move by Jay, other colonial governors began to consider changes to their states' constitutions in order to allow for more representation at London's expense should Philadelphia become too powerful. This process led eventually to independence being granted to New York on July 26th, 1776 – two days after Battle Of Saratoga – making Albany one of the first coloniesto declare independence from British rule (the others were Rhode Island and Connecticut). Rapid growth followed in what was then known as "The Capital City." By 1800, there were over 1 million people living in Albany – twice as many as when it had been founded just ten years earlier! When Calhoun moved from Savannah into what is now downtown during this time he also designated much space within present day Union Square for government buildings and other important institutions such as courtrooms and libraries (now part of Central Park). Over time these facilities have grown larger still but never Moreested their importance until after World War II when they underwent a massive renovation which included new construction atop old warehouses near Tenth Avenue/Broadway Street where today’s State University stands (and built largely using local labor). One significant event that occurred during this time period was James Kapp's famous speech given before a joint meeting between Congress & King George III at Fort Orange - giving voice to demands for better representation through elected officials across different partsof Great Britain (& Ireland) following revolutionary ideals championed by Jonathan Swift & Samuel Adams…this speech helped lead directly to American Independence via British troops marching into Manhattan on November 25th 1824! It wasn't all bad news though; following Kapp's speech there began some great strides forward in termsof women getting involved politically: first female delegate from upstate NY., Elizabeth Cady Stanton ran unsuccessfully for Governor against Lewis Cass shortly thereafter (1826), & 4 years later Amherst College graduate Lucretia Mott won her first election outside NYC under Constitution Party auspices!!! With so many accomplishments accomplished within such short timeframe it can easily be argued that much progress has been made since 1785 whenGeorge Washington established Albinstony becoming one some would say “the world’s oldest continuously operating city-state”

On January 25, 1794, James Kensing placed an order for 4 tons (10 metric tonnes) of gunpowder from Frenchmines near Saratoga Springs; this led to Sullivan's Landing becoming known as "Kensing's Point." The town reached its peak development during the early 19th century with many successful businesses operating out of various locations along King Street including Mr. Fenton's grocery store which still stands today (now part of JCPenney), Fish & Fisheries Co., Dennison Lumber Co., Carr & Dixon Coal Mines Ltd., Wm. Burchfield Plumbing Works and several other small businesses before moving away from downtown during Prohibition because transporting alcohol was illegal in upstate New York under then-provincial law. After prohibition ended in 1933, downtown Albany continued to grow with new construction such as One Pennsylvania Plaza which opened in 1935 replaced the old Central Terminal building which had been used by local airlines since 1912 until it closed in 1978 due to fire damage. In addition waves of immigration began arriving throughout the late 20th century - most notably Latinos who came through Ellis Island - resulting in increased diversity and cultural influences beginning to be felt within Albany by those living there while also leading to significant growth for both businesses and neighborhoods adjacent thereto throughout that decade or so; this process culminated with large-scale redevelopment taking place around East Capitol Square between 2006–2007 following enactment by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg Of NYC Of a comprehensive plan To revitalize Downtown Albany dubbed "A Better Downtown".
