It was founded by the Dutch in 1624 as a trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan and became an important center for learning and culture in the 17th century. In 1825, Albany became the capital of New York State; it remains its largest city. The population of Albany peaked at over 200,000 in 1920, but has since decreased to around 100,000. Achilles Healy House is a historic house located at 402-406 Second Avenue in Albany, New York. It was built between 1814 and 1816 by Achilles Healy as part of a series of homes designed by James Purdy for wealthy farmers in what is now Albany County. The house features Palladian architecture with pink brick veneers and cream trimming throughout. The Healy family continued to live there until their death in 1925. The first public school in Albany was opened on December 4, 1785 by Reverend Christopher Parkhurst as Oneida Academy under charter from King George III of England. Like many early schools, it collapsed due to lack of funding and operations were taken over by private individuals until 1800 when state education laws were rewritten to provide public schooling through local officials. In 1830s School District No 712 (now part of Ontario) started using three buildings which are also included within Oneida Academy complex: John Waddell’s Store (on Second Avenue), kitchen building (now frame house), and school building #2 (now known as State Historic Site Building).
