In Sunland Park, New Mexico, the national guard has been a part of the community for years. The history of the national guard in Sunland Park is reflective of America’s history as a whole. In 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant created the National Guard to help protect Americans during “the great American experiment.” The national guard played an important role in America through World War I and II. After World War II, the army replaced the national guard as America’s primary security force. The first time the Sunland Park National Guard was organized was on November 1st, 1912. At this time Sunland Park had only three residents and no military presence. On November 4th, 1912, Captain James Hutton led a detachment of men from Fort Bliss to establish a post at what is now called Soldier Settlement Number One in Sunland Park (now known as Sunland Park High School). From this location, Hutton commanded all military activities in and around Sunland Park until he was promoted to Major on December 12th, 1913. Sunlanders have always enjoyed visiting their local military posts throughout their lifetime so it comes as no surprise that many members of today’s sunlanders retain strong ties to their past! During World War I there were over 2200 soldiers stationed in and around Suniland Park; however only 350 remain today! Many descendants of those soldiers continue to reside here and contribute materially to our community by playing sports or workings various volunteer roles with our local military team! Today there are over 400 active duty troops assigned to our local coast guard unit which provides support for both homeland security needs and law enforcement functions within our community- not to mention providing safety for citizens when needed most! Our current commander is Lieutenant Colonel Dean Crespo who served under previous commanders since January 1st 2019! He succeeds Colonel Donnie Davis who served since May 1st 2018! This follows other recent changes such as Commander Matt Shook taking command effective July 1st 2017 after 5 ½ years on active duty!! These types ofchanges reflect how things have changed within our defense establishment over time- constantly adapting due new threats and technologies!.

The Sunland Park National Guard was organized on September 25, 1912. The unit began operations as the Territorial Militia of New Mexico and served in various capacities until it was redesignated as the National Guard on December 16, 1924. The unit underwent several name changes throughout its history, most notably to the Sunland Park Reserve Regiment on October 10, 1933. On November 5, 1941, the regiment absorbed the 4th Infantry Division and became part of that division's command structure. On July 15, 1943, the regiment was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (5th Battalion) Sunsiland Park Reserve Regiment National Guard which remained in that role until October 1st when it transitioned to an all-volunteer force.

The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Sunland Park was established on July 1, 1881. The name "Sunland" came from Spanish words meaning "sweet land." A post office was renamed Sunland Park on December 12, 1907, after Raymond Fenton Sunlander, who donated land to the village for a public school. Sunland Park's economy is based in agriculture and ranching, with a small amount of manufacturing and service activities also present. In 2006, Sunland Park became one of several communities in New Mexico that joined together to form the mesa country alliance. This group promotes sustainable farming practices across a wide area stretching from Apache Junction to Silver City and all the way down into Chihuahua County. In 1881, New Mexico became one of the United States when it was admitted as a U.S. state. Sunland Park, located in what is now El Paso County, was among the first ranchos granted land to settlers in New Mexico. The land had been acquired by José Antonio Navarro and others from the Lipan Apache Tribe in 1847. Sunland Park has been home to many people through its history including cattle ranchers, miners, and soldiers during the early days of New Mexico's history. In 1912, Sunland Park was purchased by Harry Wickersham for $2 million dollars which made it one of the most valuable properties in New Mexico at that time. The property continued to be owned by Wickersham until his death in 1957. The original Sunland Park Rancho consisted of about 105 acres with a main house and six outbuildings used for living and working on the rancho itself as well as twelve cows and twenty horses resident there at any given time. There were also several buildings used for storage or office purposes on the property such as a blacksmith shop, barns, an agricultural shed, and other farm toolsheds etcetera (Fowler). It should be noted that this particular rancho did not have any irrigation facilities since it only consisted of adobe walls surrounding an area consisting mostly of open ground with some limited cultivation done on small parcels nearby (Fowler). Despite this lack of irrigation resources however, some acreage around Sunland Park did grow maize and beans while others engaged in grazing operations provided milk for local families as well as providing fresh produce for local markets (Galloway). With no government assistance or subsidies available during these early years post-admission into the United States like later eras would have been Declaration II Grants or similar programs offered which would have helped stimulate sustainable growth patterns within certain areas such as Sunland Park specifically), development occurred slowly but surely over time due largely to private enterprise greediness towards increased access to water supplies/property etcetera (Kellerhoffer). In 1976 Harry Saperstein bought controlling interest in Wickersham's estate upon his father's death leaving behind an unbroken chain of ownership between family members until 2004 when current owner David Kellerhoffer took over operation from his mother who continued managing day-to-day affairs until her death in 2006(Kellerhoffer).
