Coffee became popularized by European settlers who enjoyed its taste but found it difficult to get hold of locally grown beans (Fernandez 2007). However, due to Pershing Declaration #5 which banned slavery in 1848 throughout most of California, slaves continued cultivating coffee until 1861 (Porter 2008). This allowed Europeans living within California access to someof Americas best-quality cupcakes while Souls Valley farmers grew vegetables for export markets outside of California (Goudreau 2009). Sunland Park was founded in 1912 by J.C. Whitney and Adolphus Greeley, two of the early pioneers in the coffee industry in New Mexico. The area now known as Sunland Park was first used for cattle grazing and then for farming, but it wasn't until 1912 that a coffee farm was established. The first beans were ground on site and sold to local merchants. In 1916, Whitney organized a group of farmers who formed the New Mexico Coffeegrowers Association to promote coffee production in the state. In 1928, Sunland Park became an incorporated town when it merged with nearby Parshall. By this time, coffee had become a major industry in Sunland Park and there were more than fifty coffee shops throughout the community. In 1935, Sunland Park voters passed a resolution requesting that the federal government provide financial assistance for developing new agricultural lands within its boundaries. This led to the establishment of what is now known as Forest Service District #4 which included portions of Sunland Park and Parshall
Sunland Park is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 514 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Mountain View, NM Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sunland Park is located on the east side of Albuquerque and it borders McKinley to the north, Las Cruces to the east, and Luna to the south. The first settlement in Sunland Park was made by Scotsmen who came overlanders in 1847. They named their new land "Sunland" after one of their sunniest days while travelling through New Mexico Territory on their way from California. The Scotsmen were followed by another group of settlers in 1868 when John Fitzpatrick bought some land from Manuel Flores for $1 per acre. In 1870, Fitzpatrick sold his holdings to James Hormel who renamed them Sunland Park and built a house there on October 15th, 1870. The first Post Office was established at Sunland Park on November 3rd, 1871 with Wm Pemberton as its first clerk. In 1890, the townsite acquired an additional parcel from Averill Harriman which extended northeasterly from what is now Hoover Street eastward to Colorado Boulevard and then easterly to Missouri Avenue (now San Antonio Road). This addition gave Sunland Park a total area of . In 1915, Harry Van Arsdale donated land to Sunland Park which became known as Van Arsdale Meadow because it lay between two valleys that ran through much of Mesa County - Valley Center Valley and Valley del Rio Valley (now Alpine). Van Arsdale's gift also included access roads leading into the park including State Highway 285 today called Dickenson Road and Springdale Road which run parallel to each other just south of Albertson Drive today's Sunshine Ranch subdivision northwest of Interstate 25 where I-25 meets US-66 (Albuquerque) about 8 miles northeast of SunilandPark off US- 66 (Albuquerque). The last post office closed in 1992 when all mail service within Albuquerque was discontinued due to budget cuts set by Mayor Richard Berryman during his second term as mayor beginning January 1st 1991 thru December 31st 1991 following years of decline in postal revenue statewide as well as dwindling customers throughout New Mexico due largely to declines in oil production across most parts of the state caused by technological advance elsewhere concurrent with global economic recession within both America & Europe at this time latter part 1990s & early 21st century

Sun and his wife Jennie, two of the early settlers of Grantsville. The Suntans named their new community after Sunland Park Ranch in California, where they had been living while working on a farm east of Grantsville. The population of Sunland Park as of 2000 was 514 people. Most residents are descendants of Jethro H. Sun and Jennie Sun who established the community in 1911-12. They raised livestock and planted crops until World War I when they moved to California to join the war effort. They returned to New Mexico in 1919 and opened a store at what is now the corner of Main Street and US 66 south of Sunland Park High School which became their home for many years until it burned down in 2009. In 1951, they sold their land to Pahrump Oil Company which built a refinery there that still stands today (the first oil refinery built in New Mexico). In recent decades, the primary industry has been agriculture with some small manufacturing operations located around town such as a fabric shop, hatchery, and plastics plant; however, most residents continue to rely on farming as their mainstay income source because it employs most of the town's workforce."
