Sunland Park was established in 1907 as a cattle and sheep ranch by Colonel George Armstrong Custer, an American cavalry officer who had been stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas. The post office was first opened in Sunland Park on October 15, 1907. By 1920, there were only five citizens living in Sunland Park. Development of the area began after World War II with the opening of the Army Air Field nearby in 1948-1949. The town's growth accelerated during the late 1960s when oil wells were discovered and development increased rapidly because of this resource.
