The New Mexico National Guard was founded on November 16, 1912, in Albuquerque by Governor Manuel Diaz. The Guard served as a militia force until 1915 when it was organized into the Territorial Militia of New Mexico. In 1935, the Guard became the New Mexico State Patrol and continued to serve as a militia force until 1942 when it became an all-volunteer paramilitary organization.
