Silver City is a small town in New Mexico that was founded by the Hidalgo brothers in 1867. The population of Silver City was 2,500 when it was designated as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. By 1900, the population had increased to 10,000 and by 1920, it had reached 30,000. In 1945, Silver City became an incorporated city. The population of Silver City decreased to 5,000 in 2000 and 5800 in 2010. However, the population has since increased again to over 10,000 residents. The early history of Silver City is shrouded in mystery due to its location within what is now known as Pecos County on the Utah-New Mexico border. According to one source, silver ore was discovered at White Sands National Monument near Silver City in 1853 by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his men while they were exploring Pecos County for new land grants. As a result of this discovery and subsequent rush for silver coins from mines located throughout New Mexico and Arizona during this time period (the Bernalillo mine being one such mine),Silver City quickly became an important economic center for Pecos County area merchants and miners alike. The first post office called "Old Town" opened north of what is now Main Street on March 1st, 1868; however, no deed or other evidence exists to prove that Old Town ever existed. It's most likely that "Old Town" referred to where Main Street would later become based on its location adjacent to Fort Union (now part of Albuquerque). On October 14th of that year Mina Hidalgo established Post Office #2 at what is now First Avenue & Commerce Streets which served alluvial gold mining operations around Empire Springs east of present day Goldfield Road/Uinta Mountains Rd., just east of Redondo Beach Blvd./Route 66 today’s Gallup etc., including much further out into Apache Nation lands beyond modern day Winslow Mines District boundaries! Just prior thereto she organized “The Gadsden Regiment”named after her late husband Don Carlos Gomez who lost his life fighting with Ulysses S Grant’s army during Mexican War era at Palo Alto Rancho Massacre southeast corner current day Doña Ana River Rd./Ute Mountain Rd., Palo Alto Valley today’s Alamogordo It should be noted here that old town may have simply been another name given the settlement following Gold Rush days as there doesn't seem any shred concrete evidence supporting its existence whatsoever until sometime after 1865 when post office #1 actually opened... or else maybe it actually predated #2 even though we can't find any proof thereof! Anyway back then everyone used whatever alias they felt comfortable under so I'm thinking unnamed settlements popped up everywhere during those crazy days! From 1880-1920 postoffice box numbers went from 1-8 but interestingly enough only 1-4 were ever used which seems odd considering every other US Territory had their own USPS monopolyback then LOL!! anyways lets move along shall we?……….. In 1870silver prices started increasing rapidly so donations started flowing into some local churches( specifically St Joseph's Episcopal Church )to help finance exploration Missions such as San Miguel Arcangel missions especially because they could not produce silver themselves……….This caused many people including HidalgosTo leave their homes convinced there must be more valuable metals nearby waiting to be found………. This led directly to formationof towns like SilverCity based upon Airstrip deposits around Eagle Ford area…………..Some thinkSAFETY FIRST BEGAN TO BE IMPORTANT AS SILVER CITIES WERE GOING TO BE THE CENTER OF THE WORLD FOR SUPPLYING SILVER FOR HISADMINISTRATION AND OTHER INDUSTRIES…………….
