Santa Fe is a town in the U.S. state of New Mexico, located on the Rio Grande about 25 miles (40 km) south of Albuquerque and 50 miles (80 km) east of Santa Cruz. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. Santa Fe is one of the largest cities in New Mexico and its metropolitan area has a population of 5,814 as of July 1, 2019. The original inhabitants of what is now Santa Fe were Puebloans who founded the city in 1785 after their defeat by Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War. The name was chosen because it sounded like "santa fe," or "holy ground." The first European to visit Santa Fe was José de la Hoz y Costilla on August 16, 1595. In 1812, President James K. Polk appointed John Cushing as military governor of New Mexico with authority over all Native American nations within his borders; this included the Pueblos and Navajo people who had been living near Taos for centuries before that date. In 1813–1814, Cushing engaged in violent land grabs that resulted in over 200 deaths among both Apache and Navajo people he claimed as Indian slaves; these actions are considered to be part of what is known as Cushing’s Conquest.. After years of wrangling between Congress and Polk, Cushing finally resigned from office on November 15, 1828 following charges brought against him by Representative Doniphan wherein he admitted guilt for conspiring to forcibly take possession of tribal lands without consent from their owners. In 1830–1832 Isabella Mesa married Manuel Felipe de Gamboa y Morales—the brother-in-law and uncleof Governor Manuel Micheltorena—and they moved from Taos to Santa Fe so that she could have more access to education opportunities for her children which she could not receive back home because her father refused permission for them to attend school outside their family home.. Upon moving into their new home they started construction on what would become Plaza de Mayo—named after General Antonio Lopez de Moseley y Arce who had led Mexican forces against Napoleonic French troops at Cerro Gordo in 1800—but only managed to completed 2/3rds of it before having to stop due to financial difficulties.. They finished it however and named it after Gamboa y Morales himself which helped set off cultural iconography associated with him throughout much later history such as a plaque at City Hall commemorating this event.. After successful completion efforts during his lifetime Plaza de Mayo quickly became known as “Esquivelada” (meaning “slippery”) due its treacherous surface conditions made walking difficult even for those experienced in foot traffic! However despite problems with funding and construction delays plaza quickly became an international tourist attraction becoming one OF THE FASTEST growing tourist destinations IN NEW MEXICO!!! As more people traveled there each year infrastructure began deteriorating until finally entire district including plaza was destroyed by fire occurred December 10th 1886 leaving few remaining structures but left an incrediblemn rawhide sculpture garden & museum still standing today

In 1912, railroad construction began through downtown SantaFe à la mode with tracks bisecting both sides of Main Street In 1927 wagon trains carrying goods upriver from El Paso reached San Miguel Station before continuing on downriver to Juárez where they unloaded supplies onto steamboats for shipment south across the Rio Grande River into Texas
