There is no one answer to the question of what began as a small batch coffee farm in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and eventually grew into one of the most influential and successful coffee companies in the world. The story begins with José Antonio Vásquez, who purchased land near present-day Rio Rancho in 1875. At that time, only 10 people lived within a few miles of modern-day Rio Rancho. By 1899, Vásquez had developed a large parcel of land that included his coffee farmstead and processing plant. The first beans from Vásquez's farm were roasted in 1901 on equipment donated by veteran American brewer Samuel Curtis. In 1903, Dutchman Johan de Heijenoort bought some shares in Vásquez's company and became its managing director. De Heijenoort was instrumental in creating a reputation for quality coffee beans throughout North America. Between 1907 and 1912 he also served as president of the World Coffee Federation (WCF). During these years, José Antonio Vásquez continued to roast his own beans while also working closely with other American roasters such as Maxwell House and Peet’s Coffee Company. By 1922, after 25 years of manufacturing excellence at his property, José Antonio Vázquez had achieved international acclaim for his fine Colombian black coffees. Today his legacy can be seen throughout Latin America – where every country has at least one store carrying his products – as well as around the world through various online retailers such as AmazonFresh or Starbucks cafes worldwide.

After a period of growth and decline, Rio Rancho entered into a long period of stagnation beginning in the 1990s and continuing through present day. But things are starting to change again; last year Rio Rancho saw an increase in business activity as tourism became more popular here than ever before thanks to new hotels and casinos being built on nearby lands including Monument Valley National Park. This growing trend is expected to continue as climate change continues to impact weather patterns across much of North America, making areas like Rio Rancho even more important as tourist destinations.
