It is said that Rio Rancho, New Mexico was founded by the Spanish in 1847. The town was named after a River Rancho in Spain. The original settlers were Mexicans who had been brought over as workers on the land. In 1868, the United States acquired New Mexico from Mexico and renamed it Rio Rancho. It is believed that General Crook, who fought in the Mexican-American War, came to Rio Rancho to scout for new land to fight for during his election campaign in 1876. The development of the oil industry in Texas and California led to an influx of people and money into New Mexico in the late 1800s. Businesses such as cattle ranches and casino profits drove up real estate prices around Rio Rancho. By 1900, wealthy Texans had built many impressive homes here including one called "The Hacienda". Members of Congress started buying property here beginning in 1906 to subdivide and sell off parcels for housing developments known as "Rio Secos" (or dry hills). One resident of this period described it thus: "It would be difficult even now to identify all of these streets or develop their names because they have all been changed since then." In 1912, when president Woodrow Wilson visited New Mexico he proposed creating a national park here along with some other West Coast states under his administration's Progressives Plan. However, due to congressional opposition both at home and abroad Wilson abandoned the idea after being outvoted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Capitol Hill. The first major road constructed through present-day Rio Rancho was built only two years later – by local ranchers looking for shortcut access to their properties across open country - while much of what is now downtown was still farmland! For all its history, however, there has been little change or development outside of these ranching operations - until recently! began construction on what will become one of Americas most iconic buildings – Burro Park – just east of downtown on Highway 66 near where US 87 meets Interstate 40 today! This $25 million mixed use project will include cultural attractions like a Friday night concert series headlined by world renowned Latin music artist Yoko Ono; retail space including an extensive art gallery; office space; and hotel rooms overlooking Interstate 40/New Mexico State Road 66

Rio Rancho is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Taos-Las Cruces, NM Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1824, José Arroyo founded Rio Rancho on the east bank of Salt Riverita Creek in what is now southeastern Rio Rancho County. The town site was platted and built by Colonel James Bowie circa 1840 as part of a large cattle drive from Fort Sumner down Virginian Trail through New Mexico Territory into Texas beginning in 1841 led by General Sam Houston. At this time much of present-day Arizona Territory lay within Mexican territory under United States occupation; so much so that Lubbock Barracks stood on what are today Old Town Square and Railroad Avenue within Mexican hands until 1862 when they were transferred back to American control under Ulysses S Grant's military occupation following the Mexican–American War victory over Mexico

The first settlers in Rio Rancho were Spanish colonists who had come from Zacatecas in southern Mexico. They built small villages near the river where they lived off of hunting and fishing rights. By 1830, however, many of these Spaniards had moved northward into New Mexico Territory because of political unrest in their home country. These immigrants brought with them their culture, language, religion ( Catholicism), trade goods such as clothing and tools, livestock (including horses and oxen), seeds for crops that would soon be grown here, as well as some skills learned over time while living in Spain: woodcarving and basketrywork were among the most common crafts practiced here at this time. As more English-speaking people arrived during the late 1800s along the US-Mexico borderlands east of Albuquerque (the old "Old West"), they also started settling down around Rio Rancho. This growth led to increased traffic on both sides of the Colorado River—a factor that helped spur new development along Rincon Hill Road near downtown Rio Rancho back then(). After years of steady growth characterized by rapidly increasing population density levels (+50% between 1870 & 1910) – thanks largely to extensive irrigation projects initiated by early ranchers José Antonio Ortiz y Ulloa (1824-1910) –1 million people now call Rio Rancho home today!
