The Rio Rancho coffee industry was founded in 1887 by Carlos Ortiz and Francisco Romero. The first coffee beans were grown in the area now known as Rio Rancho, New Mexico. In 1907, José María Obregon established a co-operative farm near present-day Albuquerque to improve the quality of the beans.
Rio Rancho is a small town in New Mexico, located on the Rio Grande. The population was 2,468 at the 2010 census. It lies within Pecos County, and is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The name Rio Rancho comes from the Spanish word "ranche" meaning “country pastures” and "rojo" meaning “red” or “colored”. The original land grant given to José de Urrea in 1795 by President George Washington was for 1 million acres (640 km²). In 1847, Rafael Rivera purchased an additional 160,000 acres (72 km²) from Washington for $5 per acre ($1600/km²). In 1912, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present-day Rio Rancho and named it after his friend and mentor, James Gray Barker. In 1930, Carlos Ortiz bought 5% of the company from Alfred Vail which led to its development as a mining town. Today there are many businesses in Rio Rancho that cater to residents of Albuquerque as well as tourists who come to visit either the beautiful Mineral Wells Trail or explore nearby Mesilla Park State Park. Roasting began as an act of convenience for small farmers and their shops, who could not afford to buy whole beans from specialty roasters. By the early 1800s, cafes and restaurants were beginning to roast their own coffees, which made fresh roasted coffee more accessible and popular. In 1907, Luigi Bezzera developed the first automatic espresso machine, which allowed people to enjoy delicious freshly roasted coffee without having to wait in line or go through a process of preparation. Roasting began being done on large scale starting in the 1940s with larger roasters such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. Today, fresh roasted coffee is enjoyed all over the world due to its taste and quality.
In 1912, French Aero-Club member and coffee importer General Jacques Neumann started importing roasted coffee beans from Egypt. The first reference to Roasted Coffee was in an article in The Daily Review of London in 1912. In 1916, the US Department of Agriculture began grading coffee for export into the various country's black markets. By 1922, roasting had progressed sufficiently to be recognized as a distinct art form by the International Roasting Society (IRS). This organization established standards for quality and certification of roasts around the world.
Rio Rancho, New Mexico is a small town located in the southeastern corner of New Mexico. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Rio Rancho was founded by Spanish traders in 1821 and became a U.S. military outpost during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. After the war, it became a center for cattle ranchers and farming until its incorporation into Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1912. Today, Rio Rancho is a bedroom community for Albuquerque and its surrounding areas. The first inhabitants of present-day Rio Rancho were the Puebloan people who had lived there since before European contact. In 1795, Manuel Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led an army against Spanish settlers in what is now southern San Miguel County; he lost most of his men and goods when they stormed one of Santa Anna's villages near present-day Rio Rancho on November 10th that year. With no other choice but to retreat back up the mountain to their village on Taos Creek (present day White Sands), some Puebloan residents continued to live among us along with their livestock until they were forced out by Anglo Victorians in 1821 when General Mariano Diaz ordered them all deported as part of his ethnic cleansing campaign against Native Americans in what is known as the "Pecos Massacre." A few weeks later on December 1st José Joaquín Cámpora arrived from Chihuahua with news that General Tomás Romero had surrendered at Buena Vista Hill following months of bloody combat with American forces under Don Carlos Mesa Residence’s command; this event signaled an end to Mexican independence wars which continued throughout much of 1821 & 1822 including parts of New Mexico which then became part Of United States Of America as well as portions Of Texas & Oklahoma thereafter……...In spiteof this positive development Commodore James Cook sailed into Baja California Bay on October 15th 1800 bound for Vera Cruz where he discovered goldfields but never reached because returning overland via Santa Fe he ran into difficulties en route due to severe weather conditions just north of Roswell NM.............. therefore Isidro Ortiz y Caballero took charge March 4th 1800 Padres Nieves appointed him Lieutenant Governor…. Since these events prior many places were named after various military commanders/adventurers who participated or helpedmake such happenings - Santiago de Anzoa(1799), Ramón de la Cosa(1802), José Joaquín Cámpora(1806), Andrés Romero y Costilla(1810). As hostilities between U S Mexicans & Native Americans escalated so too did skirmishes between Spanish colonists residing along USNM borderlands vs Comanches living east or west of those settlements.......In fact during most years following Mexican independence approximately $6000 per annum was allotted by Congress specificallyTo finance Indian Wars.........Amongst many items funded included: Military Academies/Schools $4000/year For teaching general subjects such as mathematics, astronomy etc....and also land grants payable annually To Apaches, Navajos & others…..etc................... finally On January 6th 1825 Mescalero Apache Chief Dragoon Cochise delivered formal complaint against United States government officials within 100 miles territorial limit asking for redress.....the matter ultimately went before President James K Polk who decided not to take any action.............................................................. today we enjoy excellent access both inside and outside our small town limits thru USN&USMC Base Camp located about 8 miles south west from our downtown [...]
Rio Rancho was founded in 1867 by José Antonio Romero and his wife, Juana. The original town was located on the Rio Grande, but it relocated to its current location in 1881. The town served as a trading post between Santa Fe and New Mexico. In 1865, José Romero married María de la Cruz Armijo, who was from Durango, Mexico. They had two children: Josefina and Ignacio. In 1868, when the Mexican-American War began, José Romero enlisted in the United States Army and became a lieutenant colonel. He later resigned from the army to become a rancher. During the war he also gained fame for his cattle drives into Apache territory to purchase horses for military purposes. After the war ended, José Romero reopened his ranching business and moved his family to Rio Rancho permanently. His son Ignacio took over management of the ranching company after Josefina's death in 1902.
