The coffee beans were grown and roasted on the property of José María Ortiz, who ran the Ortiz family farm until his death in 1925. The first coffee shop in Rio Rancho was called "El Canario" because it was located on the corner of Second and Santa Fe Streets. The business continued to operate until about 1930 when it closed due to prohibition. In 1933, Antonio Moreno opened a grocery store at Eighth and Broadway Streets which became known as Moreno's Coffee Shop. It operated until 1948 when it closed due to a bad economy. In 1952, Don De La Cruz started selling donuts from his truck at Ninth and Bonanza Streets which became known as Donut House Coffee Shop. It operated until 1978 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1984, José María Orozco established the Café de la Trinidad at Tenth and Bowie Streets which became known as Orozco's Coffee Shop after José María's father founded the company in 1865. It operated until 1990 when it closed due to lack of patronage or competition from other coffee businesses that had sprung up around town since its inception. In 1992, Carlos Romero reopened Orozco's Coffee Shop with backup services from his home-based cafe down Third Street which continues to serve today as Romero's Cafe & Bakery thanks to Carlos' dedication and love of coffee!

Rio Rancho was founded in 1867 by the Hopi and Puebloan tribes. The town was named for General Santa Anna, who had led Mexican forces against the United States in 1847. When Mexico became a republic in 1917, Rio Rancho became part of New Mexico. In 1930, the towns of Socorro and Gallup were merged into Rio Rancho. The town is located near the confluence of the Rio Grande and Socorro Rivers. It has a population of about 30,000 people. The main street in town is called Main Street because it links all of the businesses in town together. There are also several smaller streets that lead to different parts of the town. Rio Rancho is home to three libraries: one for adults, one for kids, and one for pregnant women and children with young children. There are also two movie theaters downtown and four restaurants including two stores that serve Indian food.
