The Rio Rancho Air Force Base was established in 1947, and has served the community of Rio Rancho since that time. The base is home to the 1st Bomb Wing, 9th Bomb Squadron, 93d Fighter Wing, and numerous subordinate units. Today, the air force employs over 10,000 military personnel stationed at the base. In honor of its history and importance to the community, Rio Rancho Air Force Base has several commemorative items on display within its facilities. These items include a replica of an F-22 Raptor fighter jet that was flown into service at RRA in 1992; a model of an A-7 Corsair II bomber aircraft that served with RAF Bentwaters in Britain during World War II; and a plaque honoring Maj. Gen. John Sanger who commanded both RAF Bentwaters and RRA from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. As part of its commemoration efforts, RRA also hosts various educational events throughout the year which focus on aspects relevant to its history and mission. These events often include exhibits about different aircraft types used by the air force or historical demonstrations featuring more recent models of aircrafts. This year’s event will be no exception as it will feature a fly-in runway show conducted by 2nd Lt. Col.(JG) Nolan Pate with Boeing 737 jets providing transportation for visitors from all over New Mexico to attend!

The museum was founded in 1984 by Colonel Don H. Heineman and Mrs. Florence L. Heineman with assistance from the New Mexico Air National Guard Association. The museum tells the story of how the air force has helped shape Rio Rancho as a community and has helped contribute to the economy since it was first established. It also features exhibits about military aviation, history of fighter aircraft, and World War II vintage planes.
