The Navy has deployed in Portales since World War II, serving our country and its citizens with distinction. The city of Portales is home to the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), which was established in 1942 as the first naval surface warfare center in the United States. The Naval Air Station Fallon, located east of town, offers a variety of operations and deployments for Sailors and Marines from across the nation. In 1947, NAVY CINCPAC COMMAND reported that "Naval personnel are providing assistance to Civilian Authorities during certain periods of emergency." This continues through today as we provide support to both local law enforcement and Federal agencies when needed. Our community has come to expect this level of service and welcomes Sailors and Marines who deploy here on their assigned assignments. Portales has been a major hub for Naval activity in New Mexico for many years now, hosting numerous functions including Fleet Week events, ceremonial sword presentations by Rear Admiral Harry Jaffe, port services day open houses/banquetnight events for midshipmen at NAS Fallon followed by an Independence Day fireworks display over I-25 just outside of town on July 4th. In recent years we have seen an increase in military hardware being brought into our community; from new ships coming online at NAS Fallon to Fort Bliss sharing space with us here at NAS Portales – there is always something happening that brings our Sailors and Marines together! Each year we celebrate different aspects of Naval Service through various activities such as Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the city, Fleet Week demonstrations at NAS Fallon or even more traditional events like Pie-eating contests between Sailors from both towns during Portsale's annual parade! It’s truly amazing how much these small moments add up over time - each year more people come together to celebrate what makes America great!

Portales, New Mexico is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Arizona. It is bordered by the Mexican state of Baja California to the south and east, and by Pima County to the north. As of the 2010 census, Portales had a population of 2,865. The name "Portales" may be derived from Spanish meaning "headquarters." The first people to live in what is now Portales were Native American Indians. In 1851, Captain John C. Frémont explored this area and named it Fort Bowie after his old military outpost in Alta California. In 1863, General James Fenton defeated Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Watts at San Jacinto River Bridge near present-day San Bernardino County when forces from both sides skirmished near what is now downtown Portales. In 1886, Wm Hatton opened a sawmill here which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed in 1923 due to low demand for wood products during World War I and World War II. The mill produced aircraft parts such as landing gear assemblies for Boeing airplanes before its closure. After years of development work by local entrepreneurs and investors led by banker Fred Hughsen (1915-1998), Portales was incorporated as a municipality on November 3, 1959; its citizens voted overwhelmingly to change their name to Longa after Reginald Longa Jr., an owner and developer who helped finance much of the city's early development efforts. Lona served as mayor from 1978 until her death in office on December 30th1999; she was succeeded by beloved daughter Nelda Longa Dominguez who held office for two terms before becoming community relations director for Albuquerque Municipal Utility District No 8). At Lona's funeral service many prominent Citizens including Mayor Don Armstrong paid their respects with flowers or food provided by local grocery stores across town while hundreds more lined up outside within minutes of arriving - just like they do every year on her birthday! In 2005 Lona's grandson John Hatton became mayoralty candidate but he lost against incumbent Rudy Chavez

Portales is a town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bernalillo County. The first people to live in what is now Portales were the Taos Apache and they hunted and gathered food near Adobe Canyon. In 1829, José de la Cueva y Ortega founded a rancho (property) called Rancho San Francisco on the banks of the Rio Grande about four miles east of present-day Portales. The Ortesga family continued to own and manage Rancho San Francisco until 1892 when it passed into private hands. In 1846, Ramón Ortiz settled at what is now downtown Portales; he had come from Zacatecas with his brother Miguel Ortiz to homestead land that would become Bernalillo County. Ramón Ortiz built aadobe cabin and named it "Albuquerque." A post office was established at Albuquerque in 1870, but no mail went through because there was not yet a railroad connecting Albuquerque with Santa Fe Springs. In 1875, Santiago Peralta opened a mercantile business in downtown Albuquerque which grew into what is today Socorro Trading Post & Mercantile Co., one of New Mexican's largest businesses. In 1865, Captain Dominguez visited Portales for supplies while commandeering an American ship captained by Captain John Adams as part of Operation Crossroads during the Mexican-American War; he noted that "the place [Portales] has been taken by surprise ", probably due to its strategic location midway between Mexico City and El Paso on Ulysses S. Grant's route across southern Texas following General Antonio López de Santa Anna's flight from Austin toward Monterrey after days of fighting along the Texan borderland west of Refugio Blanca Pass). Commodore John Fenton sailed upriver from Vera Cruz on December 10th issued orders ordering all American vessels sailing downriver within 12 nautical miles (19 km)of any port or settlement except Tehuantepec or Puebla had their steamers stop operations without payment of customs duty; this order became known as The Fenton Code (). On January 3rd 1870 Captain Edward Hoyle anchored off shore about three miles northeast of modern day Downtown Portaleanchoring his army transport ship USS Constitution under Lieutenant Commander Luther Vail with stores for General Manuel Urquiza Campaign against insurgents forces occupying Veracruz Peninsula . That same day ashore another team consistingofLieutenant Commander Luther Vailand Sergeant James Carleton landed aboard HMS HermesI am sure this event led to further development at our current plaza also serving as both dockside market place for local agriculture and commercial fishing as well as public square/gazebo located behind Historic adobe building currently home to several restaurants including Giuseppe’s Italian Grill Incorporated , Bocce Garden Incorporated Giraldo’s Mexican Bakeryincorporating two stories Mission Style architecture designed by architect Hiram Maxim who also designed numerous other buildings in town including St Peters Catholic Church which still stands today adjacent to original plaza dedication date November 15th 1889

The town grew rapidly due to the presence of a few mineral claims and the development of post office, school, and hotel systems. The first store opened in 1851. By 1865, Portales had a population of over 1,000. In 1880, the city incorporated as a municipality under the name "New Mexico City." The economy of Portales declined after World War II because of competition from neighboring Santa Fe and Albuquerque. However, growth has resumed in recent years thanks to new businesses and redevelopment projects. In addition to its role as an important cultural center for New Mexico's Taos Indian Nation communities, Portales is also home to several high-tech companies and colleges including New Mexico State University (NMSU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), among others.
