The Marines who serve in the United States Armed Forces are a proud and diverse group. Some of them are drafters, poets, musicians, and photographers. They are also some of the most dexterous soldiers on earth. In Portales, New Mexico, there is a history of Marines deployed gift history that goes back to World War I. On December 12th, 1917 Pacific Marine Barracks located in what is now known as Veterans Park opened its doors to provide accommodation for troops and their families who were fighting in Europe. At that time, the Marines had not yet developed their present-day traditions of giving gifts to friends and family members while they are deployed. However, over time they have come to appreciate the gesture and have become known for doing so during military deployments both homeported and overseas. In 1855, Marines were deployed in Portales, New Mexico as part of the Mexican War of Independence. The Marines fought in a series of battles against Mexican forces before withdrawing to their base at Fort Tejon. They played an important role in the Battle of Mogollon Hill and the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1858, they returned to Portales and participated in the Santa Fe Campaign. In 1860, they withdrew from the war following the Battle of Peña Blanca. The Marines returned to California in 1865 and disbanded that year.
Portales is a small town in northwestern New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,679 at the 2010 census and it is the seat of Portales County. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Portales occurred in 1847 when José María Castro, an American army captain, founded a trading post on the San Felipe River near present-day northeastern Portales. Castro named his new settlement "Portales" after himself and two members of his party who had traveled there weeks earlier on their way to Santa Fe. In 1851, John Wesley Powell and George Washington Custer discovered Devils Tower in southern Wyoming while exploring the Rocky Mountains for US president James K. Polk; as a result, Portales became known throughout thewest as "the Gateway to The Rockies". In 1861, Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Reno here during his Overland Campaign against Confederate forces during the American Civil War; after its closure by Union troops in 1865, Fort Reno served as a military depot until it was destroyed by fire in 1876. Although never an official U.S. capital city like Denver or Phoenix, Albuquerque's growth as a center for banking and commerce has caused its nickname "The City of Light" to spread to Portales; indeed, many businesses belonging to New Mexico Highlands banks have their headquarters thereabouts (e.g., Horizon Energy). Some other early businesses that were based locally include Agriscience Tobacco Company (founded 1912), Bemis Rubber Corporation (founded 1917), Electricity Supply Company (founded 1923), Wells Fargo & Co.'s branch office from 1907 until 1957, and Humble Oil & Gas Company from 1916 until 1978. After World War II came recession times which took their toll on local businesses: most notably Agriscience Tobacco Company closed its doors in 1951 due to low sales rates following years of consistent marketing support from then-Governor Don Carlos Salinas de Gortari; also impacted were Electric Supply Company's sales levels prior to deregulation which led bank owner William Daley Sr.) to invest $5 million into buying out distributor GulfCorp.; only twelve months later Electric Supply company went bankrupt again because deregulation had not yet taken hold within New Mexican banking systems; finally well-known retail store Humble Oil & GasCompany closed up shop amidstst mounting debts acquired along with related properties during this time also including several truck stops across northeast NM unrelated thereto all located just south of I-25 concurrent with various other retail stores being shuttered throughout much of late 80s thru early 90s resultant loss/damage totaling $100 million cumulatively over 10 yrs! considering today’s market conditions such closures would be classified as “failed business” under current guidelines nonetheless they are still considered among NM’s more famousFailure stories however! Unlike some neighboring communities significant industry continued existing even into Dust Bowl era providing jobs for locals although production methods changed etc.: such was case with nearby Juarez where nearly every family had their own cow/cattle farm leading directly to increased demand for milk products consequent increase prices received by consumers thereby fueling numerous industrial ventures especially aroundtownship limits while Juarez remained essentially self-sufficient

Portales was a small town in New Mexico before the United States acquired it in 1912. It is now a ghost town, located about 15 miles northeast of Las Cruces on I-25. The community was first established by Spaniards in the early 1600s and was known as "Casa de la Esperanza." The town was most likely founded by José Antonio Portales, who immigrated to New Mexico from Spain in 1824. He became one of the largest landowners in the area and built a number of mills and other businesses. In 1875, he married Ana Maria Martinez and started to name his children after prominent New Mexicans: José Antonio (1876-1957), Amparo (1878-1964), Francisco (1880-1962), Pedro Armando (1882-1968), Lucila Huerta Santiago (1884-1969) and Narciso Martinez Hernandez (1886-1976). In 1912, Portales submitted a claim to become part of the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On November 16, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order 9669 which recognized Mexican land claims north of Baja California Sur. As a result, Portales became part of US territory northwest of Baja CaliforniaSur. The population increased rapidly following World War II when many American soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss brought new families to Portales. However, this prosperity ended with the war's end and soon afterward joblessness set into motion what would eventually be known as the "Portale Syndrome." After years of economic stagnation, few people moved into or invested in the townsite until around 2000 when some developers decided to convert it into an RV park/motel complex called "Las Vegas".
