In the early 1900s, Portales was a small farming town located in the center of New Mexico. The town was known for its coffee beans and its high-quality coffee. The coffee beans were roasted and exported to other parts of the United States. The town also produced oilseed crops, which were used to make soap and other products. In 1951, Portales decided to switch from growing coffee to corn production. This change led to a decline in the quality of the coffee beans, as corn is a more efficient crop than coffee. However, the community has maintained its tradition of high-quality coffee since that time. Today, Portales is home to one of the few remaining bean roasters in New Mexico and produces some of the world's best-quality cups of coffee.

Portales was founded in 1847 by Father Francisco Martinez and the Sisters of Charity. The city's first coffee plant was built in 1853, and it became one of the leading coffee-producing towns in New Mexico. In 1865, Portales became the capital of New Mexico and its first city. The city's rich history is still preserved today with a number of museums, including the Museum of Anthropology, which houses important artifacts from local Native American cultures.
Portales, New Mexico is a town located in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,926 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of Albuquerque County and is south of Deming. The first Europeans to arrive in Portales were traders from Spain. In 1824, Francisco Villa led an uprising against Spanish rule in what is now El Paso County and began negotiations for independence from Spain. On December 12, 1825, at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo,New Mexico became part of the Mexican Republic under Emperor Agustín de Iturbide. A year later, on January 6,1826, The Treaty of Taos ceded all but about 16 square miles (40 square kilometers) of northeastern corner of Alta California to New Mexico This area now includes much of downtown Albuquerque and portions of Roswell and Farmington Hills in Michigan. In 1828-29 Pedro Garza founded a small town near what is now called Garza Mesa east of present-day Portales along with Manuel Armijo and others who left Santa Fe after military defeat at Buena Vista Hill by John Cushing's Ulysses S. Grant's forces in November 1846 during the Mexican–American War On February 9th 1830 Don Carlos Chavez married Francisca Martinez de la Cueva y Ramos which created legal racial tension between white Anglo Americans and Native American Pueblo people as well as lack thereof among Mexicans living westward within 100 miles or so
There is no one definitive definition for “high quality coffee.” However, many experts would agree that high-quality coffee refers to a product that has been made with care and attention to detail. This includes ensuring the beans are fresh, of good quality, and have been roasted in a way that produces an intense flavor and aroma. In order to ensure that all of their coffees meet these stringent standards, some of the world’s most respected roasters maintain strict tasting guidelines and certify their products against certain defects. These include but are not limited to: flawed bean shape; sour or pungent flavors; incorrect roast time; excessive bitterness or acidity levels; and too much caffeine. Some of the first high-quality coffee beans were grown in Africa by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. After arriving in Europe, these traders began purchasing Indian and African coffee seeds from local farmers and planting them back on their plantations in Brazil, Indonesia, Chile, Peru, Africa, and other countries. As word spread about this unique flavor profile and potential for profit, larger roasters began producing certification programs specific to African Coffee Bean excellence. Today there are more than 50 certified roasters who produce high-quality coffee from around the world. The first coffee was roasted in Ethiopia in 1974. The beans were brought overland from Africa by a group of farmers and tasted for the first time at an Ethiopian café. The coffee was then exported to Europe and America.
Portales is a small town in New Mexico, located on the edge of the Manzanares Mountains. The first European to visit the area was Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, who explored and mapped parts of what is now New Mexico in 1540. In 1821, Portales was founded by Manuel Martínez y Arroyo as a trading post on an old Spanish trail that led from Santa Fe to Gallup. It grew quickly due to its strategic location and its natural resources: coal and gold were discovered in the early 19th century, and the town became a major center for mining during the late 19th century. In 1912, Portales was designated as the seat of Pecos County by act of Congress. The county has since been divided into several municipalities: Alamogordo (1975), Portales (1984), Roswell (2000), Carlsbad (2002) and Socorro (2006). The town has experienced various waves of growth throughout its history. Its heyday came during World War II when it became one of the most important military bases in New Mexico after Fort Bliss was established there. Afterward, however, portalean development slowed until the 1990s when new housing developments began to spring up around downtownportale and other areas within walking distance of campus. Since then, there have been numerous updates to both cityscape and infrastructure including new libraries, restaurants and stores; as well as numerous renovations to existing buildings such as churches, schools and hospitals.

In the late 1800s, however,Portales began to decline as it lost its status as a commercial center. The town nonetheless continued to thrive as a cultural center and educational hub until the early 1920s. After that time, it slowly declined again until it ceased to exist altogether in the 1940s.
