Portales is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, located on the border with Arizona. The city was founded by Antonio Portales in 1847. It became part of Mexico City in 1912.
Portales is a small town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Mesa-Rio Rancho Cerrado Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to Portales were the Franciscan Fathers who founded the Mission San Francisco de Portales in 1695. The mission was abandoned in 1794 and most of the buildings were destroyed by a fire that year. The Mission Chapel still stands on Elm Street near I-40 east of town. In 1859, Don Fernando Flores took over ownership of what was left of the original mission and built an adobe ranch house on what is now Main Street. In 1865, Don Fernando married María del Carmen Cuevas and they started another ranch west of town which included land for a new post office which they named "Portales". They also built a church and school which remain standing today. The flour mill was built in 1898 by Jules Beaudoin and it remains operational today as Doña Ana County's only operating flour mill. In 1907, Charles Haddon bought some land east of town from José Joaquín Peralta y Sánchez and began growing corn, beans, potatoes, wheat and other crops there until his death in 1928. After his death, his son Charles Haddon II continued farming while living off royalties from his father's properties until he sold them all to New Mexico State University for $2 million dollars in 1984 During World War II TWA Flight 847 crashed into mountains just outside Portales killing all 269 passengers including 15 children from the family of William "Bill" Shriver Sr.. There has been much speculation about what caused this accident but no concrete evidence has ever been found

Portales is a small town located in the southeastern corner of New Mexico, about 15 miles south of Gallup and 60 miles northeast of Albuquerque. The town was founded in 1885 by Spanish-born brothers José and Francisco Portales, who named it for the port on the Rio Grande where they had been trading goods with their Mexican brethren. The original settlers were mostly Mexican citizens who had come to work on the railroad. By 1912, however, English-speaking settlers had arrived, and soon there were several churches and businesses in the town. In 1916, Portales voters passed a resolution asking the federal government to recognize its municipal status as a result of its location on an Indian reservation. The town's growth continued through World War II as families migrated to work in munitions plants or other wartime industries. After the war ended, business began to slow down again and poverty became entrenched among many residents. In 1970, however, Portales voters passed a resolution requesting that the city be incorporation into the larger community; this proposal was approved by City Council members but never came into effect because no money was available to finance it. In recent years, Portales has seen some revitalization efforts - most notably with development of its downtown district which has brought new life to an area that was once largely rural. As more people move into areas such as this one, it is likely that more history will be written about this small town which has long been proud of its ties to both New Mexico and England.

In 1880, the town had a population of 350 people and was part of the Mora County seat. In 1912, it became a part of Doña Ana County. In 1937, the port at Portales began to be developed as a commercial center with industry developing around it. The population peaked at 1,500 people in 1949 but declined over the next few decades due to technological advances and other economic factors.
