Lovington, New Mexico is located in the southwestern corner of Texas. It is bordered by the Mexican state of Baja California to the southwest and Nuevo León to the north. The population was 7,531 at the 2010 census. Lovington is one of two cities in Nuevo León that are designated as seat of government for both the southeastern part of that state and for Tamaulipas, which includes several municipalities in New Mexico. The town site was settled by Americans in 1848 after ranchos were established thereabouts by José Antonio Rosales and Juan Bautista Torres. The first businesses were a saddlery, brush trade and cattle drives. A post office was established here on February 14, 1850; it remained in operation until 1904. Lovington's history begins with General Emiliano Zapata's Mezquital Expedition which passed through this area on their way from Chihuahua to Zacatecas on November 9-10, 1911. Arriving at Fort Bliss near present-day Mescalero they camped there before continuing northwestward across what is now known as Arizona into New Mexico Territory where they met Santa Ana Pueblo Indians who had been living near Socorro City for some time previous to that event During World War I Lovington served as an American military airbase engaged against German forces operations over central New Mexico Territory during WWI which also included parts of neighboring Tamaulipas County . After hostilities ceased Lovington became a U.S military garrison town providing educational opportunities to soldiers stationed there while also hosting civilian workers employed by US DoD during WWII After VE Day (end of World War II) Lovington returned its citizens back to their homes except for a few soldiers garrisoning the city limits until 1980 when all army troops lefttown effective January 1st . presently only services provided by USD Border Patrol
