Lovington, New Mexico is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Pima County, Arizona. As of the 2010 census, its population was 635. The town was founded in 1887 by J.D. Loving and his wife Anna Maria Lovejoy, who also founded Lovingtonshire Ranch. The town has a rich history that can be traced back to 1887 when J.D. Loving and AnnaMaria Lovejoy settled in what is now Lovington after traveling through Mexico City on their way to purchase land in what is now Tucson. They named their new community after their youngest son John Denton Loving (1867-1927), who had died before they arrived in Arizona Territory. The couple's second son, Harry M., later served as mayor of the town from 1912 to 1916 and again from 1922 until his death in 1934; he was also an early owner of the local newspaper, "The Herald". Lovington experienced growth during World War II as a result of its role as a military airfield for the United States Air Forces Ninth Air Force Training Wing at nearby Phoenix Municipal Airport (later Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport). In 1944, the base became Maricopa County's first county seat when it was established under statehood following Arizona's admission into the United States. The community continued to grow during postwar years as more people moved here from throughout southern Arizona and northern Mexico; by 1990, there were over 1,500 residents living in Lovington proper and adjoining unincorporated areas including parts of Cochise County and Gila County
