Lovington, New Mexico is a small town located in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Haskell County seat. Lovington was founded in 1885 by John and Elizabeth Loving, two pioneers from Delaware who moved to west Texas to start a new life. They named their new settlement after their father-in-law, General George Logan, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had settled in Pecos County near Albuquerque. Lovington experienced some growth during its early years as a result of its proximity to railroad lines and other industries. In 1907, it became one of several towns within Haskell County that were consolidated with Alamogordo to form the newly created Mescalero County. During World War II, Lovington played an important role as a munitions plant and military base for the USAAF during the war effort. After hostilities ceased in 1945, Lovington underwent various changes which continue to this day including becoming an incorporated municipality in 1958 and then again as an unincorporated community in 1978. Today, Lovington continues to experience significant economic development due to its location within Mescalero County and its status as a bedroom community for downtown Alamogordo. The town has also become well known for its annual parade which features floats made from local materials such as cowboy hats and guitars; well-known performers during recent decades have included country music icon Dolly Parton and soap opera star Lee Majkowski.
