Los Lunas is a small town in New Mexico, located on the east side of the Sandia Mountains. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. The name is Spanish for "The Moon." The first inhabitants of Los Lunas were Acoma Pueblos who lived near what is now Albuquerque. They built their settlements near Mesa Verde and traded with other pueblos in the area. By 1500 AD, most of these people had relocated to what is now Santa Fe because of increasing persecution from the Aztec Empire. In 1536, Pedro de Alvarado discovered and explored present-day New Mexico while searching for a route to Guanajuato. He named this region San Miguel del Bajío after his friend and mentor, Bishop Alonso de Alvarado y Zumárraga. Spain began expanding its empire in North America and took control of Los Lunas in 1540. Afterward, Spanish colonists founded more than 50 towns and villages throughout New Mexico before giving it back to local Native American groups by 1847. Los Lunas was founded as an adobe rural community by José María Cibola on July 4, 1865 following his desertion from Fort Sumner during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). It quickly became one of numerous new settlements established along Route 66 during that period when settlers flocked to what was then uncharted territory in search of mineral rights or ranching opportunities. The post office at Los Lunas opened on December 12th, 1886 under name Oficina de Correos en las Islas de Tierra Firme (Office for Mail onshore). From its inception until 1912 it served as a hub for mail distribution between Alamogordo and Santa Fe through processing plants at both towns’ agencies. Los Lunas was founded in 1878 by José María Martinez and his wife. The town was named for the Lunápolis Hill, which is located within the town limits. In 1865, Los Lunasite families helped organize the New Mexico Territorial Legislature. The town's first post office opened in 1876. It served as a stop on stagecoaches between Santa Fe and Gallup until 1915.
