The Marines of the 2nd Marine Division deployed to Los Lunas, New Mexico as part of Operation Neptune's Spear in 1992. They were tasked with clearing landmines in the area and providing security for humanitarian aid workers. Los Lunas is a town in San Miguel County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Miguel County. The name Los Lunas comes from Spanish for "The Moon." The first settlement in the area now known as Los Lunas was founded by Juan Bautista Vigil on November 3, 1827. It was named after the moon, since then its residents have called it La Luna (the moon). In 1881, Los Lunas became part of the United States and was designated as a city by an act of Congress. In 1907-1908, during the Mexican Revolution, local Mexicans fought against U.S.-backed forces led by José María Cortés y Soto. Some people in Los Lunas supported their insurgents while others actively participated in supporting Ulysses S. Grant's forces when they invaded Mexico City that year. After that conflict ended and Mexican independence was proclaimed, most people moved away from what had become known as "The Moon".
