Los Lunas, New Mexico is a small town located in San Miguel County, New Mexico. The population was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Miguel County. The name "Los Lunas" comes from Spanish and means "the moon." The first permanent English settlers in what is now Los Lunas were two families who arrived with cattle overland from Texas in 1846. They named their new settlement after the moon which they saw while on their trip. In 1863, James Fenton founded a store and post office here. In 1875, John Blyde homesteaded land adjacent to Los Lunas and built a cabin called Fort Bliss into which he added an oven for his bakery and other purposes. By 1902, all but three members of the Blyde family had died here or moved away due to various health problems. A few years later another post office was opened here by Wm Hargrave under the name of Luna City; however this too closed down within a few years because no mail could be delivered to it from Luna City due to lack of roads. In 1906-07 Edward Dickey built a windmill that still powers it today for use as a tourist attraction on Highway 66 about five miles east of town on the edge of an old mine field (now part of Open Space Ranch). Over time many other businesses have been established along Interstate 10 near US 71: dairy products company Frontera Farms Inc., gas station/convenience store Empire convenience store, truck stop etc.; until very recently there was also an open air museum housing pottery pieces dating back to 1880s and early 1890s owned by local artist Don Marshall; however most recent development has been residential subdivision nearby with large commercial buildings erected since 2000 near Interstate 10 and US 71 access points providing easy access to jobs within minutes' drive or via public transportation (walking or biking) from central Los Lunas developments such as supermarkets Walmart Supercenter/Mall Santa Fe etc.). A number of movies were shot at Luna City studios including “National Velvet” (1945), “The Grapes Of Wrath” (1948), “Citizen Kane” (1941), “To Kill A Mockingbird” (1962), “The Godfather” trilogy(1974-2006) and more recently “Logan Lucky” (2017). Los Lunas is a small town in New Mexico. The population was 2,000 at the time of the 2010 census. It is located in Taos County, about 20 miles east of Las Cruces and 60 miles north of Albuquerque. The first European settlement in what is now Los Lunas was made by Spanish colonists in 1695. The village was named for Don Francisco de Luna y Arellano, one of the conquistadors who explored this area during the early 16th century. In 1806, José Antonio Urrutia settled here with his family and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1827, José María Otero arrived from San Miguel de Allende to homestead land near Los Lunas. He also founded a ranch here that became known as Rancho Otero de las Minas (Otero Mine Ranch). A second post office called Los Lunas was established in 1898; it closed due to lack of mail service in those days. A store opened here in 1902 and remains open today as an antique store/entertainment complex called La Luna Stage & Grill. In 1912, Don Carlos Ibarra opened a general store in Los Lunas which continued until the late 1950s when it burned down due to arson. However, La Luna Stage & Grill has remained open ever since and continues serve as a major tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike.
The Los Lunas Massacre occurred on October 5, 1860, when Confederate forces attacked a Union military camp near the town of Los Lunas, New Mexico. The attack killed 11 Union soldiers and two civilians.
