The marines have been deployed in many places around the world, but no place has seen more of them than Las Vegas. They have fought in World War I, II and III, and now they are fighting in Afghanistan. The marines have given back to the community by giving freezers and generators to families who are struggling. In December 1942, the Marine Corps sent a team of Marines to Las Vegas in order to provide security for the new MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. The marines were initially deployed as part of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines Regiment. The battalion was later renamed the 1st Marine Division. In 1945, a detachment of marines was sent to New Mexico in order to help with the aftermath of World War II. The marines lived and worked in Albuquerque until 1948 when they were moved to Roswell, New Mexico in order to be closer to duty at Fort Bliss. In 1951, another detachment of marines arrived in Roswell and remained until 1957 when they were activated as part of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines Regiment which became known as "The Blue Angels". Since then there have been periodic deployments or detachments of marines throughout southern New Mexico and Arizona in support of war efforts such as Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. As of now there are over 1,000 marines stationed within these two states who are responsible for providing much-needed security for both locals and tourists alike.
Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was over 1 million at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Nevada and the second-largest city in Arizona after Phoenix. The area that now includes Las Vegas was known as Nacogdoches by the Paiute people before European settlement. The first white man to sight the valley on July 8, 1851, was Captain John C. Fremont of the United States Exploring Expedition, which surveyed and named the basin for General James H. Kearny who had explored California two years earlier. On November 9, 1875, Las Vegas became a U.S. military post following victory over Mexican forces at Tax Day celebrations held near what is now downtown Las Vegas Boulevard South. A year later Mormon missionaries arrived to preach Christianity to Native Americans living in what would become downtown Las Vegas today and began construction of what would become known as Red Rock Resort and Casino on Spring Mountain Drive (now Tropicana Avenue). Fremont's expedition also discovered gold deposits in nearby Nacogdoches but no attempt was made to exploit them because of concerns about losing control of an asset potentially worth $5 million at that time plus interest payable on it to anyone who found it; instead Fremont recommended returning home with his findings so that other pioneers could explore further into Mexico if they were interested in such a valuable deposit! As part of negotiations leading up to their Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ending American Indian Wars throughout most of New Mexico Territory on March 14, 1886,[1] Stephen Fenton successfully negotiated behalf of Native American leaders including Chief Washakie and forced Spanish explorer José María Chiriquí Trujillo—alias El Coyote—to sell all or part of his land east side of Las Vegas Valley for $6 million less than its current market value! This event forever changed Downtown Las Vegues skyline with prominent buildings built along Spring Mountain Drive including The LINQ Hotel & Casino which opened in 1998 atop what had been former Sierra Pacific Railroad property north from Interstate 15/Upton Road; MGM Grand Garden Arena opened just south across I-15 from Circus Circus Strip Race Course; Gila River Indian Community College relocated from old Fort Sill Army Depot northeast corner km marker 25 (now Donatello Road) adjacent Gila River National Forest; Luxor School District No 5 (later Desert Hills School District), established 1912 at Mohave Junction mental hospital west side desert road between Black Canyon Street NW and Sahara Avenue WNW becoming Monterrey School District #2 (today’s North Union Elementary school) located south east corner off Apache Trail between East Tropicana Avenue EAST and Sunrise Boulevard WEST
