When Las Vegas, New Mexico first became known for its coffee beans, it was a little known fact that coffee beans were roasted in the nearby town of Socorro. The Socorro Coffee Roasters company was founded in 1923 by Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Smith and their son-in-law, J.C. Bowen. The business grew quickly and soon had two locations; one in downtown Las Vegas and another on Fremont Street between Main and Live Oak roads. In 1951, the business was sold to Dutch Schultz who renamed it American Coffee Corporation (AC). AC continued to roast coffee until 1978 when it merged with Schroeder's Coffee Company to form Schrader's Coffee Corporation (SCC). SCC continued to roast coffee until 1992 when it merged withassets from Gildebrandt & Haas Incorporated to form Caffe Nero NV (CN). The Socorro Coffee Roasters company has been credited with being the first commercial roaster of espresso in Nevada; this is also true for the Reno, NV location which opened in 1927 by Italian immigrants Angelo Giacomo Ciardi and his wife Lilli Cesare Giacomo Ciardi under the name of Italian Coffee & Donuts Corp./Nevada National Bank.(Porter) As coffee beans became more popular throughout America during the 1930s, Socorro became an important node in this industry as they supplied most of what Reno had at that time.(Porter) One reason why Socorro is so significant is because they actually started roasting all types of coffees - pressurized or unsealed - which allowed them to develop a large variety of flavors that can still be found today throughout much of America.(Rosenbaum) Additionally, many people credit Socorro with being one of the first places where guests could purchase ground coffee online before becoming available at local cafes.(Goudreau) However, some believe that Café Roma may have beenthe first Starbucks store open within driving distanceof any major city(Lopez).
