In 1941, the Coast Guard booth at Caesars Palace was moved to its current location. The Station Manager’s office is currently located in a part of the casino that used to be known as “the black market” because it was where dealers took bribes for contraband cigarettes. In 1961, the first helicopter arrived at the Strip and began providing air support for law enforcement operations in Las Vegas. Today, helicopters fly into and out of McCarran International Airport to provide search and rescue services during thunderstorms or other emergencies on or near the Strip. The first cutter, CG-1, was launched on October 1, 1916 and served until 1919. In 1922, the first squadron of Coast Guard Cutters was created and it consisted of three boats. CG-2 served until 1925 when she was replaced with CG-3. In 1927, CG-4 was commissioned and it became the first helicopter in the Coast Guard fleet. It served until 1941 when she was replaced by CG-5 which also served during World War II. From 1942 to 1945, CGH-6 served during World War II with distinction. Additionally, from 1951 to 1957 CGCG-7 operated as a training ship throughout the Mediterranean Sea before being decommissioned in 1958 and being reactivated in 1961 as Cutter HMCS Moncton (LF39). Since then, all cutters have serving stints with one or more coast guard Squadron(s). Since its inception in 1915 through 1946*, coast guard gifts have been an important part of their history and culture*! However, there is only limited information available about this topic since most of these transactions took place behind closed doors! Therefore, I will take some time to discuss some specific aspects about coast guard gift history that I believe are worth noting: First and foremost*, gifts were often given in commemoration of special occasions or events such as birthdays or anniversaries*!
