Army Deployed Gift History in Las Vegas, New Mexico can be traced back to 1951 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers created a small army detachment in order to provide humanitarian assistance during the Korean War. The detachment was known as the 9th Engineer Battalion and was composed of American soldiers from Nevada, Arizona, and California. The 9th Engineer Battalion operated out of Camp Cooke located in Las Vegas. The battalion provided engineering support for Operation Jump Start which was conducted on September 25-29, 1951. During their time at Camp Cooke the engineers managed to complete various tasks such as construction of a dam and associated infrastructure projects. Additionally, they constructed several wells and other infrastructure items necessary for Operation Jump Start. In May 1952 the 9th Engineer Battalion left Camp Cooke and traveled to New Mexico where they resided at Fort Bliss until October 1953 when they relocated permanently to Las Vegas. In 1954 the battalion again moved when they were redesignated as the 3rd Engineer Brigade which consisted of both infantry units (the 5th Infantry Regiment and 6th Infantry Regiment) as well as artillery units (1st Artillery Brigade). On November 1st 1954 these organizations arrived in Sin City under command of Lieutenant Colonel John Ewart who served as commanding officer for 3rd Brigade until his retirement on December 15th 1959. Since their arrival in Las Vegas there have been numerous changes occur within 3rd Brigade including its assignment from Marine Barracks Garden into Fort Stripes; changes within its infantry regiments including troop reductions; promotions within company levels; deployments throughout Nevada and Southern Colorado during Desert Storm; reassignments within Army structure including an establishment of Task Force Bravo-2 which included elements from 3rd Brigade along with Air National Guard troops stationed at McCarran International Airport; staff changes resulting from Brigadier General David Acheson’s appointment as Commanding Officer for III Corps after his resignation on January 17,1991 effective February 14th 1991; Major General George Casey’s appointment as Commanding Officer for III Corps effective March 7,1991 who would lead 3rd Brigade through most of Desert Storm while also remaining responsible for II Corps providing air superiority over IraqW8 As part of this deployment general services functions were transferred from II corps HQ element to I corps HQ element making III corps HQ element responsible only for military police function8 Finally upon General Casey’s departure on April 2nd 1991 elements from I corps Headquarters moved into III Corps HQ elements vacated by then MajGen Casey9 With these various changes taking place within3rd Brigade it is no wonder that there has never been one specific gift or donation that has influenced or dominated its history since it was first activated in 1951.
