The history of the navy in Las Cruces, New Mexico goes back to 1846. The first military engagement between the United States and Mexico took place on July 10, 1846 when U.S. Marines fought against Mexican forces at Cerro Gordo. The Navy played a significant role in this early conflict, providing logistical support for the American forces. In 1865, during the Civil War, the Navy helped support Union Army efforts against Confederate forces in New Mexico. With the end of the war, naval activity in Las Cruces dwindled until 1895 when Commodore John D. Morgan established a Naval Air Station here to provide air services to Allied ships operating in Mexican waters. In 1912, Commodore John Waddell established a Naval Postgraduate School at nearby Sinton Field which would become one of America’s leading graduate schools of maritime science and engineering. In 1935, after World War II ended, Commodore Raymond Vinson organized what is now known as NAS Las Cruces (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) which became one of America’s most important aerospace research institutions. Today, NAS Las Cruces continues its proud naval tradition by sponsoring world-class competitions such asESSO Americas Cup racing and sailing; conducting scientific research; and educating students from across America about maritime history and culture.� Las Cruces was once home toAmerica's largest warshipyard - USS Constitution Yard - where over 1 million tons were produced during the Revolutionary War alone.� After that yard closed down due to budget cuts in 1790�the navy turned its attention towards coastal defense duties.� A new shipyard was built on Governors Island �offshore from centralLasCruces �and it functioned until 1903.� However�the navy had not abandoned long-range patrol duties�� so another new shipyard was needed�� this time on Arizona Beach near Anadarko.� This facility lasted until 1944 when it was replaced by NAS Roswell.� NAS Roswell began operations on April 1st 1945 with 11 Boeing 707 aircraft.� It soon became clear that NAS Roswell would be an extremely important institution within our armed Forces�� both because of its technological capabilities����������� which included development of radar technology����������� as well as its ability to Conduct secret government missions�to name a few examples.� Consequently ������� aboard NAS Roswell were some of America's most famous Cold War astronauts including Neil Armstrong � who set foot on Earth's surface for the first time ������� famously stating: "I can see God looking out." Aircraft production resumed at NAS Roswell after World War II but slowed down again following Korea �� though resumed again following Vietnam �� culminating with decommissioning in 1978.� On September 15th 1978 USS Griggs relieved USS Constitution at Roswell Harbor permanently transferring custody thereof to NAS LasCruce becoming our newest commissioned vessel ever!

In 1840, James Fenton erected a small adobe building in what is today Old Town Square to serve as the first courthouse in what would become Las Cruces. In 1861 Captain John Sutter sent an expedition upcurrent along Arikaree River to find new land for California colonists when this area was still part of Mexico City territory; this area later became eastern New Mexico Territory under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency during America’s Civil War (1861-1865).
