One of these men, George Hearn, named his new town after his native land - Ireland's Clare Province - which he had seen while travelling through Sonora Coast region of southernMexico on his way southward to find gold fields. The townspeople of Clare Province built their first homes around 1852 and started trading with settlers throughout northernNew Mexico Territory including Santa Fe and Tucson Arizona before finally settling in what would become Las Cruces due to its central location within Albuquerque County and easy access to transportation via stagecoach routes linkingSanta Fe with Tucson and PhoenixArizona." In 1915 Harry Kellar established Kellar’s grocery store on Fifth Avenue between University Boulevard and Broadway which became one of the most important shopping areas in town until it closed down around 1980".
