The Coast Guard in Las Cruces, New Mexico has a rich and colorful history. The first coast guard station was established in 1869 and the present station was built in 1940. The Coast Guard played an important role in helping to protect our coastline during the early stages of World War II. Today, the Coast Guard provides essential security for our local communities and helps keep us safe from hazards on our open waters. The history of the Coast Guard in Las Cruces begins with Captain William Hodge and his men operating from boats on the Nacooche River. In 1869, Captain Hodge organized a corps of harbor defense guards to help protect our coastline. At that time, there were no roads or shipping lanes connecting our mainland with the offshore islands and towns located near Ouray County’s coastline. To provide security for these areas, Captain Hodge ordered his men to use their cannons, bows and arrows,and swimming skills to guard against pirates and smugglers. Captain Hodge’s successor as captain of the harbor defense guards was Lieutenant John Fenton who served until 1885 when he resigned because of health problems. A new captain was appointed but died before he could take office; this left command vacant for three years until Lieutenant John Larkin assumed command on October 10th 1887 after being recommended by Captain Jinkson. Las Cruces, New Mexico is a city in Jalisco, in southern Mexico. It has a population of over 100,000 people and is the capital of the central Mexican state of Jalisco. The history of Las Cruces dates back to the pre-Hispanic period. The first humans to live in what is now Las Cruces were the Chichimecas. The Chichimecas were expelled from their homeland by the Aztec Empire in 1521 AD. In 1532 AD, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Las Cruces and founded a small town on an elevated location called "Mendoza". On September 21, 1695 Santa Fe was founded as a new town near present-day Paso Robles when Captain Fernando de la Vega bought land from local ranchers for $20 peracre (about 1/4 acre). Diego Rivera served as both Mayor and Town Clerk for Santa Fe during its early years. Las Cruces became one of the most important towns in central Mexico due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major trails - one leading west to Zacatecas and another leading east to Durango and Puebla. The arrival of American settlers led to increased competition for market space within las cruce and also caused some change in demographics which resulted in increased Hispanic settlement throughout New Mexico Territory including Las Cruces. The first school with pupils grades K-12 was established here on November 7th 1874 by Nancie Hoggatt who donated land adjacent to her farmstead on Third Street between Washington Boulevard and Valley Road where she taught Sunday School Classes until 1893 when she went into business as an insurance adjuster For six years prior this she had volunteered at Our Lady's School located at Sixth Avenue between Main Street and Capitol Boulevard which closed pupil’s enrollment through 1892 because no more teacher could be found who would willing commit full time hours teaching without compensation then receiving government support forms that guaranteed her reimbursement for expenses not covered by her private insurance policy; usually these forms are given away free at many museums etc... A similar program operated out of Georgetown (now Washington D C) during this same time frame with that school eventually closing circa 1930s because there weren't enough pupils or teachers available anymore In 1907 George W Bush Sr acquired 10 acres north of downtown las cruces opposite Hospital Drive from Jno Fenton resulting into his civic engagement with giving back part way down Hospital Drive close enough so people could shake his hand & say hello before turning around goin back home
