Hobbs is a town in southern New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The name Hobbs likely comes from Spanish meaning "town on the bend" or "settlement by the bend". In 1881, USGS Surveyor General James M. Hindman named a stream after Major Samuel C. Hobbs (1792-1865) an officer in the Mexican-American War and later governor of Cochise County. cattle ranchers were also early residents of Hobbs and other areas around Santa Fe due to their superior land holdings and access to good grazing country. A post office called Hartley was established in 1865, but it was discontinued in 1870 because of too many requests for mail from far away. Hobbs first saw settlement when Captain John Denton founded Rancho de la Luz on what is now Hobbs Road in 1872 during his survey for feldspar mining claims near present day south Hobbs High School. The area that would become known as Hobbes was platted by Nathaniel Prentiss, who bought much of what is now east Hobbs from Captain Denton, including most of what is now downtown and north side streets between Colorado Boulevard and I-25A/US 80: Prentiss laid out a square block with one street running due east (the present day corner of Colorado Boulevard and I-25A), another running west (northwest corner of I-25A), two rods wide (southwest corner), three rods wide (northwest corner). He named it Prospect Valley after his friend wealthy prospector Isaac Haggerty who had helped finance his gold discoveries near Jamestown Hill about 15 miles northeast across Rio Grande River from Prospect Valley where Haggerty built his house today on Old Uinta Highway just south of Interstate 25 exit 114B/exit 16B/ road leading northwest to White Sands Missile Range adjacent to Mesa National Park containing numerous prehistoric sites as well as ruins dating back over 10 thousand years old! In 1881 local storekeeper Elisha Fenton opened a general store at Second Street and Broadway which became known throughout town as The Fentons Store; this store remained open until 1925 when it burned down along with all other stores in town during a direct hit by an atomic bomb dropped over Japan! One can still see some remnants remaining today on Second Street opposite Broadway intersection! Some early settlers were Leland Wainright, Abram Goodyear, James Gentry, Asahel Beanhorst & family arrived wagon train #2 June 6th 1863 headed for Albuquerque via Pecos River crossing desert etc., they camped near current day eastern edge Of Townsite before moving On into new Territory Of New Mexico

Hobbs, New Mexico is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the US state of New Mexico. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Hobbs were Spanish conquistadors in 1540. A mission was established there in 1827 by Father José de Urquiza and Father Francisco Gutiérrez, who arrived from Spain with several hundred missionaries intending to convert Native Americans to Christianity. The mission failed and closed in 1829 after a severe drought destroyed much of northern New Mexico. A post office called Hobbs was founded in 1836, but it never received any mail. In 1861, local Mormon settlers founded a community called Mesa Verde on an east-west military road that crossed Hobbs Creek between Mesa Verde and Santa Fe. They renamed it Fort Snuffer after General George Armstrong Snuffer, commanding Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Hitting rockbottom financially during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848), they abandoned Mesa Verde in 1868 and reestablished their community at Hobbs Creek near their original fortifications. Hobbs experienced its greatest growth early on as miners began arriving in the mid-19th century for gold mining operations along nearby San Miguel River valley floors; however, production stopped by World War I because of scarce supplies of ore and competition from other mines across New Mexico and Southwestern United States. During World War II, hobbit companies helped produce munitions for US Army units stationed throughout New Mexico Territory; however, production ceased again following hostilities ended in 1945 due to increased global demand for aluminum products.
