The coffee industry in Hobbs, New Mexico started as early as 1875. The first coffee beans were roasted on the family farm by John and Nancy Hockaday. By 1895, the Hockadays had opened a small café called the Grapes of Wrath. In 1912, a group of local businessmen purchased the farm and began to roast their own coffee. They named their business The Grapes of Wrath Coffee Company. In 1928, a new company was founded in Hobbs by Harry Fenton II and his brother Art Fenton. The company was known as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Company. At this time, hobbs was one of the most important coffee towns in America due to its location on route 66 between Albuquerque and Phoenix. Over time, various other businesses have been located in or around Hobbs including: Koffee Klatch (1994-2001), Second Chance Books & Coffee (2006-present), Snacksmiths Café (2007-present), Black Horse Coffee Roasters (2008-present), Pint shop at Old Depot Cafe (2009- present), and numerous other cafes and restaurants over the years!
