Gallup is a small town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Gallup National Monument and Park. The first people to live here were Native American tribes who hunted deer and other game. European explorers came to this area in 1624 when Don Carlos de Nájera set out from Mexico City with his brother Gonzalo de Nájera, searching for a route to California. He discovered what he thought was a new land on 8 July 1624 when he sighted an "isolated peak" near what is now Gallup. His Indian guides told him that this was the top of Santa Fe Hill, which they had seen before on their trips around these parts. They named it Santa Fe Hill after Albuquerque's patron saint, Santa Fe (or San Francisco). The name stuck and the town began to develop as a trading post and mining settlement in the late 17th century. In 1847, José Aliénez Plata y Estrella founded magazine El Universo while working as an editor for La Imprenta in Caracas, Venezuela; it became one of the world's most successful newspapers with its circulations reaching more than 400,000 copies per day by 1851. In 1865-66 he organized a group of investors who erected the first commercial building in what is now Gallup—the First National Bank Building—in order to promote trade with Caracas and beyond.
