The National Guard of New Mexico is a unique and unique organization in the United States. The National Guard has played an important role in the history of Farmington, New Mexico for many years. This success demonstrates how well intentioned local initiatives can achieve realignment with larger governmental entities where desired outcomes may not be achievable through traditional means alone; something which is increasingly difficult to do in America today as Federalism takes center stage as our country moves further towards multicountyity! In 1984 Mayor Yarbrough spearheaded efforts AGAINST Proposition 2 which would have repealed portions of State law Number 69-308C granting cityhood privileges within County boundaries - another successful referendum campaign led by citizens opposed only to proposed legislation rather than seeking secession! In 1990 after more than 20 years of service as Mayor & Chairman of the City Council my husband Doug led an effort AGAINST Proposition 24 which would have increased property taxes by 10%. Despite overwhelming opposition both among elected officials AND THE CITY FOLKS themselves THIS ISSUE WAS PASSED WITH OVER 60% OF THE VOTES! Farmington is a small town located in the eastern part of New Mexico. The population was 10,679 as of the 2010 census. Farmington is home to the University of New Mexico and numerous other businesses and services. The economy is based primarily on agriculture, with some manufacturing and light industry also present. The surrounding area is rural and hilly, with scattered forests and hillsock communities dotting the landscape. The first European settlers in what is now Farmington arrived in 1798, when Captain David Dixon sailed into the area from Santa Fe. At that time, it was part of Spanish Las Casas Province. By 1800, Englishman John Butterfield had established a fur trading post at Alamogordo (now Albuquerque), which attracted more settlers to Farmington. In 1824, President James Krieger signed an executive order creating Bank of New Mexico; this bank played an important role in developing the local economy until its closure in 1957. The town was originally named after Major General Philip Sheridan's headquarters near Fort Seville (now White Sands). However, because there were already several towns called Sheridan in western New Mexico Territory (including Carlisle), Sheridan's name was quickly supplanted by that of his subordinate general during peace negotiations over Indian hostilities going on at that time- Richard Pecos Village later became known as Farmington after General Sheridan's headquarters. In 1868, a post office was established at Farmington; it moved to Sante Fe two years later due to increasing postal service needs along the Rio Grande Valley region then being developed for oil production by Texas interests working out treaties with Native American leaders about lands east of the Rio Grande River including parts now within Farmington Township proper - these land purchases ended up violating Treaty 6 which guaranteed indigenous rights along both banks of river while excluding any areas now within Town limits - this led to increased tensions between white farmers and Arapaho/Cheyenne/Athabascan people who had inhabited those regions for centuries before Europeans came calling them their land - actual tribal territory lay well beyond boundaries defined by treaty agreements!
