Farmington coffee history began in 1883, when a French-Canadian farm boy, Gustave Boisseau, started to roast coffee beans on his family's small plot of land. By the turn of the century, Farmington had become one of the most important coffeeproducing towns in New Mexico. The town's first commercial roasters were Jean-Baptiste d'Einville and Nicolas Lachance. In 1907, John Davenport and Sons opened their first store in Farmington. Over the next few decades, other local businesses such as Mrs. Dean's Bakery and Mr. Simons would open their own stores in the town. By the early 1920s, Coffee King Enterprises was established as one of New Mexico's leading grocery stores. The company continued to grow throughout the years and by 1970 it had become one of New Mexico's largest retailers with over 250 stores across nine counties. In 1980 Coffee King merged with JBS Companies Inc., becoming JBS Coffee Corporation (JBC). JBC continued to grow rapidly during this time and by 1990 it had reached its peak size with over 1,500 stores across thirty-six states and Canada. By 2000, however, JBC announced that it was going through several financial difficulties and would be liquidating its asset portfolio including many of its smaller independent roasters along with some 285 brands overall. In 2001 JBC sold all its assets to Peet’s Coffee & Tea for $2 billion dollars making it one of the largest individual buyouts in history at that time.

In this paper, we will explore the roots of gourmet coffee and its many different forms. We will also look at some of the major pioneers in this field and their impact on the industry as a whole. Coffee first appeared in Southeast Asia in the 6th century AD as an infusion from dried beans brought over by traders from India. The earliest recorded reference to espresso comes from 1492 AD when Giovanni Battista Maestro wrote a book called “De la Caffea” which describes how to make coffee using fresh ground beans. Coffee became popular throughout Europe after it was introduced to Spain by Portuguese sailors in 1502 AD. Spanish settlers soon discovered that roasted coffee beans could be used to make a unique type of tea called “tequila” which they drank at social events or when feeling drunkardsick. The Dutch were also influential in early coffee culture, playing an important role in developing Java (now Indonesia) as one of the most ancient regions on earth with rich historical and cultural ties to Africa and South Asia. Coffee began being exported from Java to Europe through sailing ships during the 16th century thanks to explorer Hendrik de Vlamingh and his brother Jan van Dyck who sailed along Java's coast searching for Spice Islands (now Thailand) where spices such as cloves, cinnamon, gingerbread houses etc., were grown prolifically.]]]> During this time period spices like peppermint oil (from trees growing near Jakarta), cardamom pods (from Sumatra), cedar oil (from Lebanon), nutmeg (from Burma) etc., were also being traded extensively between European shipping companies and local merchants across Southeast Asia.]]>] This established Dutch trading posts dotting Indonesian coasts becoming points ofelia for various maritime activities including spice trade, piracy and slave trade.]]>] In 1602 AD Goudaerts arrived at Batavia ('Jakarta') with new plantations planted by his father-in-law Nicholas Flesch who had returned home following two years exploring New Holland.[Flesch named his new plantation 'Nieuw Gelukkige Koloniën' ['New Happiness Colonies'] – henceforth known as Java]] After six months Flesch gave up Plans he had made while exploring New Holland due to lack of success; he then decided instead return home with his son Abraham Franszoon van der Laan[Flesch's successor at Nieuw Gelukkige Koloniën], set about importing African slaves back into Amsterdam forreed service under their own terms rather than British soldiers Captured men hitherto working on Franszoon's estates found themselves subject now not only directly but also indirectly - through their masters - to Muslim religious laws & practices."[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] One consequence was that subjects would often convert en masse or flee their owners without leave or replacement due both directlyto Islamic regulations forbidding conversion within Christian households,[8][9][/10]and indirectly because many families lost access either completely or partially to essential goods & services they depended upon during their enslavement]. Farmington was founded in 1847 by the father of the present town, John A. Farmington. After a visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1846, he decided to establish a settlement on an old Rancho de la Union estate near what is now downtown Farmington. The first settlers arrived in October of that year and started building their homes. By December they had erected the first courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Farmington. In March of 1848, the Mexican-American War began and for three months the community was constantly bombarded with artillery fire from both sides. The town quickly became known as "the battlefield of Albuquerque." On November 15th of that year, General Zachary Taylor's army came into town from the north and burned everything down within sight - including the courthouse and most of the homes in downtown FarmINGTON. This event forever changed downtown FarmINGTON as it becomes one of the most notorious areas in all of New Mexico for looters and robbery during this time period
Farmington was founded in 1828 by George Morrison, a British settler. The first post office in Farmington was opened in 1830. In 1848, the town of Farmington became an incorporated village. The first school was built in 1850 and the first church was built in 1856. The population of Farmington grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1870 it had reached over 1,000 residents.During the American Civil War, Farmington sided with the Confederacy and lost many citizens to Confederate forces. After the war, many veterans returned to their homes and businesses in Farmington; this period is known as the " reconstruction era".In 1865, farmINGTON established a library which still operates today.The population of FarmINGTON continued to grow throughout the 20th century until it peaked at around 30,000 residents in 1970; however, since then it has decreased slightly but remains very populous thanks to both births and migration. During this time there were also several major development projects undertaken within town such as the construction of new schools and hospitals.
