The Farmington Air Force Base is home to the U.S. Air Force's 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, which flies the F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter and has a large air base storage area that can accommodate up to 40,000 pounds of munitions. The wing also operates the E-3 Sentry aircraft, which are used for early warning and control missions over land and in airspace above Iraq and Afghanistan. The wing was activated on September 8th, 1947 at Goodyear Army Air Field in Arizona as part of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). It flew aerial refueling patrols during World War II before becoming an operational fighter unit with P-38 Lightning fighters during the Korean War. In 1950 it became a bomber squadron flying Boeing B-47 Stratojets while stationed at RAF Coningsby in England until being transferred to Farmington on October 1st, 1951. The wing received its first operational F-18A Phantom IIs on November 15th, 1952 when it moved from RAF Coningsby to Farmington AFB under Second Lt Clarence Lucht's command. The wing began operations using Lockheed P2V Neptune reconnaissance planes in late 1953 before receiving their first Douglas A-4 Skyhawks for ground support roles in 1955. In 1957 the wing became a joint primary training unit with Portugal's Primeiro de Agosto Air Force Base where pilots learned how to fly both American and Portuguese designed jets from Brazilian pilot instructors flown into Portuguese bases across South America as part of NATO forces training deployments around the world from that era forward. After much testing and modification including conversion of two old USAF Waco bombers into Cessnas for low level air transport duties (LTA) operations over Israel during Operation Desert Storm IFR bombing runs against Saddam Hussein's Baghdad regime in 1991 this type of aircraft were phased out by USAF but continue employed by JordanianAir Force as transports today under code name "Pamulo". From 1992 through 1995 additional F/A 18As were acquired via lease from British Airways plc., now British Aerospace BAe Ensign Aircraft The 1st Tactical Fighter Wing had been upgraded with Lockheed Martin F-16C Fighting Falcons on 9/8/2011 after more than twenty years use of McDonnell Douglas DC3H Stratofortress veterans

Farmington, New Mexico is a small town in the southern panhandle of New Mexico. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Socorro County and home to the largest agricultural community in New Mexico. The name "Farmington" comes from French meaning "place where hay is made." The first Europeans to visit what is now Farmington were Spanish traders and missionaries who traveled through this area in 1610-1611. They named it San Esteban de las Salinas for St. Sebastian, a Catholic missionary who had worked hereabouts in 1598. In 1795, after Mexican independence from Spain was granted, General James Kelling divided Socorro County into four districts - Alamo (north), Jemez (south), Socorro (west) and Pecos (east). On November 3, 1834, Farmington became part of district No. 1 within new district No. 2 created by order of President Andrew Jackson following his Southwest Campaign of 1833-1834. District No. 2 included all present day Socorro County except for Partsville which was annexed to Santa Fe County in 1912 In 1936, District No. 1 was abolished and its members were transferred to newly created District #3 which includes present day Farmington as well as most of Jemez and parts of Santa Fe Counties east of the Rio Grande River
