It has been said that Clovis, New Mexico is the birthplace of Tactical Coffee. The first recorded mention of Tactical Coffee was in 1892 when a Mr. A.K. McCloskey mentioned it in his travelogue as being grown in the area. In 1929, an article about coffee beans and their production was published in the Clovis Republican newspaper. That same year, a Mr. Edward Ayer opened up his own coffee shop called Crow's Nest Cafe in Clovis which began serving Tactical Coffee to customers who frequented the store. In 1951, Johnnie Boone opened his own coffee shop called The Roost which became known for its Rogue Turkish Coffee which then became commercially available to consumers throughout New Mexico and Colorado by 1957. By 1978, all three cafes had closed down due to economic reasons but they left behind a legacy of quality coffee that continues today

The village site that stands today at mile marker 191 on US-60 near Clovis was once a thriving community with over 100 people many of whom were farmers and ranchers. Today only a few remnant buildings remain including a Methodist church and two schools which were built in 1936 and 1951 respectively. The remaining villagers have strong Iowan heritage which can be seen throughout their dress, speech, and actions. There are several interesting aspects about this small town such as its history being tied to both Spanish colonial times as well as current day American Indian reservations nearby where some of the earliest permanent Native Americans settled during both times period. Additionally, it's location close to Interstate 40 means that commuters often stop by for dinner or buy snacks here when they're travelling through NM on their way between states
