These villagers may have included members of the same family who lived at Mesa Verde before moving there around 1200 BC or so. Evidence from these excavations indicates that early humans living near Tikal were trading with groups farther north including those at Mesa Verde as well as visiting villages elsewhere in New Mexico during this time period. The presence of Earlier Puebloan ceramics at these sites also suggests some continuity between local populations and those dwelling further south in California or Oregon during this era

The population was 1,694 at the 2000 census. Clovis was founded by members of the Ojibwe tribe in 1827 and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. The town was named for Capt. John Clovis, an American Revolutionary War officer who served with distinction as a scout and guide in New Mexico Territory. The first Europeans to explore what is now New Mexico were Spanish adventurers and traders from Spain's colony on Hispaniola. In 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado discovered what is now Santa Fe County while exploring the area between Albuquerque and Taos. He named it Nuevo México after his home country, Peru; however, no European settlements were established in this area until 1610 when Pio Pico established a presidio at Alamosa along the Rio Grande River. In 1795-96 Governor Manuel Armijo ordered surveyors to explore claims for Rancho del Carmen near present-day Socorro City; one such surveyor, Don José de la Luz y Pavón, pronounced "klah-vee-nuhs," arrived at Clovis on April 11, 1796 aboard HMS Beagle under Captain Cook's command while exploration of North America was being conducted by Englishman John Williams during Cook's third voyage commanded by Commodore James Cook
