Clovis is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. The Jemez Mountains are a ridge that forms the eastern edge of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. A small community, Clovis first arose on the east side of this mountain range, near what is now Telluride. That settlement gradually grew until it became an important trading center for Gila County, New Mexico, and surrounding counties. The town prospered both as a commercial center and as a political power center due to its location atop high mountains within easy reach of other settlements statewide. One of Clovis' most famous residents was Ulysses S. Grant, who served as president of the United States from 1849 to 1853 and again in 1867–1869; he also spent some time in Clovis during his presidency. Another well-known local figure was Prescott Bush, son of George H.W. Bush; he served as governor (1929–1933) and vice president (1981–1989). Today Clovis remains largely rural with many farms and ranches located around its few streets and two churches - one from the late 19th century wooden frame structure built by settlers for themselves, used until recently as a library/ museum;the other more recent brick building which replaced an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1922 In early 2014 there were plans to demolish all but one wall of old white clapboard schoolhouse which had been standing for decades on end next door to their present Lutheran Church buildings across from Highway 191

Clovis was an important city in New Mexico during the time of Spanish colonial rule. The Clovis culture is one of the oldest known cultures in North America, dating back to at least 12,000 years ago. After centuries of contact with Mexican and European settlers, the Clovis culture slowly evolved over time into a style that is known today as the Pueblo Culture. The first Europeans to arrive in New Mexico were French traders who explored the region in 1610. They named the area after a small village near Paris, France, which they had seen on their travels. Over time, other European explorers and travelers visited New Mexico and discovered its many natural resources such as oil wells and mineral deposits. In 1798, Spain ceded New Mexico to American independence under pressure from Great Britain. In 1847, gold was discovered in what is now Nevada but no attempt was made to explore it because of concerns about potential Indian attacks on land concessions west of Santa Fe. The discovery of gold led to a wave of migration eastward by Anglo-Americans seeking fortune. Thousands of men and women traveled through California via steamboats before finally reaching New Mexico in 1848. By 1860, more than 60% of the population living in Albuquerque was Anglo-American or Irish Catholic; only 10% indigenous people remained among this population (Wright 1979). The Gold Rush period brought great wealth to towns like Las Vegas and Reno but also enormous social upheaval as thousands upon thousands worked feverishly for little return on their investment while others labored below poverty lines without any hope for upward mobility (Kleinfeld 2013). Even though mining operations yielded few benefits for society as a whole outside money laundering and smuggling cartels flourished (Ferguson 2009), new entrepreneurs quickly sprang up to take advantage of this newfound opportunity: saloonkeepers became rich overnight thanks to booming business rates; transportation costs plummeted as railroads came online;and prices for goods gradually began rising at home while falling abroad because tariffs were raised on imported goods (Brewer 2003). Asmining boomed but soon exhausted all available oxide resources; large areas became uninhabitable due either floods or drought; smallpox killed off huge numbers of workers early on; local leaders abused power arrayed against them by establishing themselves Factories Statesmen etc.; various social unrest ensued which created conditions conducive not only for plundering but also insurrectionary activity especially during harsh winters when food ran out rapidly .... these factors produced disastrous consequences both politically [i]nd socially’(O’Malley 1998)
