Carlsbad is a small town in the southern Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 62 and Interstate 10 east of Albuquerque. The first people to live in what is now Carlsbad were three Spanish traders named Juan de la Hoz, Vicente de Balboa, and Alonso de Alvarado who journeyed through this area in 1540-1542 looking for new routes to Santa Fe. They arrived at the present site of Carlsbad on July 20, 1692 by way of Pecos River which they crossed near present-day White Sands National Monument. In 1847, prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Carlsbad and began building an infrastructure for supplying miners with water, food, and ore from nearby hillsides. In 1860, General Antonio López Bonilla organized a band of Mexican soldiers led by Captain José Joaquín García to drive out American settlers in the area who had encroached on Mexican land claimed by both countries since 1846. By 1865, most of the old mining camps had been abandoned as a result of competition from new mines developed along US Route 66 north and south of Carlsbad. The town emerged as a farming community around 1870 as settlers brought over more than 350 acres (18 hectares) of land to build homes that still stand today within one block of Main Street between First Street and Second Street - one block long when founded).
