Carlsbad is a small town located in New Mexico. The population was measured at just over 10,000 people in 2000 and the population has grown to over 17,000 people as of 2010. It became a permanent settlement in 1828 when it was moved from its original location near the river's mouth because of flooding caused by the floods of 1825-26. At first, Carlsbad consisted only of adobe buildings surrounded bycmdán (a type of sandstone) walls which served as homes for Josefina Ortiz and her husband Tomás Ortega Sr.. A number of businesses were organized around this time, including an inn and bakery, mercantile stores, blacksmiths’ shops, several churches and pueblos (villages). In 1869–70 Moroni López built what is now known as El Rancho de los Pinos – one of Carlsbad’s most famous landmarks – within sight of present day downtown Carlsbad. The town grew rapidly due to its location at an important trade route between Zacatecas and South Texas. By 1830, Carlsbad had a population of around 100 people and was known as one of the most prosperous towns in New Mexico. However, it became embroiled in a series of conflicts with Native Americans over land rights and access to resources. In 1837, Carlsbad residents unsuccessfully attempted to secede from New Mexico and form their own state under the name Arizona Territory. In 1846, when Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Indian nations to join him in fighting against American forces invading California, many Carlsbad residents sided with their Indian friends and residents began refer to themselves as "Nuestra Señora la Guadalupe." As war continued to rage throughout centralMexico, many Carlsbad residents decided that they needed more than just bread and circuses while living among FRIENDS-the Mexicans-and formed a militia called Los Pinos (the Pine Trees). Led by Captain John Sutter, who had earlier helped purchase Rancho Atascadero from José Joaquín Cárdenas for $8 per acre (approximately $270 per hectare), Los Pinos fought side by side against Mexican troops until they were forced into retreat near Chihuahua City on October 26th 1850.
