The Navy has deployed gift parcels to Artesia, New Mexico for years now. The tradition began in the late 1800s when the Spanish garrison in this small town sent gifts to the Marines stationed at Fort Bliss. The USS Vandenberg (CVN-88) deployed to Artesia, New Mexico in late 1945 as part of the United States Navy's Third Fleet. The ship served in the Far East until early 1946 when she sailed back home to Charleston, South Carolina. She arrived at her new base on May 15, 1946 and remained there until September 11th, 1946, when she sailed for Japan. Upon her arrival in Tokyo Bay, the Vandenberg became the first American warship to be stationed in Japan since World War II. She served as a US Naval hospital and airbase until her retirement in 1972.
Artesia, New Mexico is a small town located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The population of Artesia was 1,890 as of 2010. It is part of the Ciudad Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Artesia" means "bridge over the river". The first European to discover and map this area was Giovanni da Vergata in 1519. He named it after his hometown, Ateneo della Ragusa (now Ravello, Italy). The first permanent settler in what is now Artesia was José Antonio Armijo on October 10, 1875. He bought 4 acres (1 km²) near the present day intersection of Paseos de la Reforma and Guerrero Streets for $100 cash. A post office called Artesia was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1922. In 1902 an irrigation ditch was constructed north of the original town site by contractor Francisco Romero to irrigate crops grown by local farmers. In 1906 an express train derailed at mile marker 5 on Ute Pass Road just before reaching Artesia; all passengers were killed save one man who got away uninjured. In 1907 a hotel opened up on Main Street which became known as the Hotel de las Américas (later known as Getz Hotel). An amusement park called La Cienega Park opened in 1912 and closed in 1915 due to sanitary issues with water used there; it reopened under different ownership several times before becoming defunct again around 1980s-1990s. In 1938 a Methodist church dedicated to St John Baptist replaced an old adobe building that had served as a school since 1845 adjacent to La Loma Cemetery where people from surrounding villages would gather during hot summer days for picnics or religious services provided by organized groups like the Missionary Society of Jesus or Presbyterianism which then controlled much of southern Chihuahua County including Artesia Township}. One side edifice still stands today: its front facade has been restored and it serves as a museum near downtown Ciudad Juárez about Municipal History from Pre-Hispanic Times through Today

The following year (2003), Navy sailors sent a selection box filled with items such as luggage tags and keychains commemorating service members who had died since September 11th 2001 terrorist attack on America's capital city New York City as part of Veterans Day observances throughout the nation. Artesia is a town in Rio Grande County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rio Grande County. The Artesia Formation is a geologic formation in New Mexico. Member rocks of this formation include the Acoma and San Augustine formations. The Artesia area was first settled by Native American people about 3,000 years ago. European exploration began in 1794 when Captain Manuel de Salazar and his men discovered a route from Santa Fe to Pecos Valley through present-day Albuquerque. In 1821, José María Córdoba founded the Rancho del Apache at what is now Artesia after purchasing it from the Taos Apache band of Native Americans. In 1829, José Antonio Meade established mission station San Francisco del Norte near what is now downtown Artesia; he named it after General Francisco Javier de Montoya y Castilla y Leal who had visited New Mexico that year on an expedition against Mexican rebels under Santa Anna. A post office was established at Artesia in 1871, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1912, John Wesley Powell explored parts of today's New Mexico Territory while exploring the Milk River region for gold prospectors; his findings led to discovery of nearby Tonopah Canyon which became part of Arizona later that year. In 1916–1917 Antonio Meade homesteaded land around present-day downtown Artesia; he named it after him and his father John Meade Sr., founder of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (now ExxonMobil). The new community developed rapidly during World War II as thousands of military personnel stationed there produced food for local soldiers and civilians; many businesses were established during that time including JW Lumber Company (now lumberjacks), The Bearden Paper Mill (now Bearden Paper Company), Texas Instruments Laboratory (later AMD), The National Broadcasting Service Radio Service Station (later KNX) and The First National Bank (now Bank One). After the war ended, most residents left to return home or start their own businesses; only a few remain today within downtown boundaries. Downtown ArtsIA experienced significant redevelopment following Hurricane Katrina damage in 2005; several restaurants/bars opened up within its bounds as well as new housing developments such as Lighthouse Pointe Apartments and Capitol Towers development which are located next to Interstate 10 on Capitol Street just east of Broadway Avenue NE
The town of Artesia, New Mexico was founded by Mormons in 1867. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 500 people. The Mormon community built the first school in Artesia and also started a post office. In 1876, the Mormon Church built the first LDS temple in New Mexico.
